Man, I did not get this book. At all. I am a DC fan from way back, and I was (more or less) around when Kyle Rayner made his first appearance in the DCU, so the opening pages of the book were somewhat familiar to me. I can't imagine that they would make much sense to a new reader, though. In fact, the only hint we get that the events of those pages take place in the past occurs on or about page 8, when we see a "present day" narration box. The rest of the book has various nameless characters losing their multicolored rings (for what reason, I can only guess), followed by representatives from the various corps tracking down Kyle Rayner, who, for some unknown reason, has attracted those rings to him like a magnet. In other words, it feels sloppy and disjointed, heavy on the color, but light on substance. I'm not really even sure what the story is, or why I should care about it. And I'm already a fan of Kyle Rayner. The art is brilliant in places, but rather mundane in others, so I'm of two minds about it. Overall, I'd say it's good, but not great, and certainly not enough to make up for the lack of story depth. I wanted this to work, but I needed more than I got from this book to convince me to stay. It may be only a first issue, but for me, it's also the last.
