Who would think a book containing a funeral for a fly could be this good? This book is pretty much always solid, so I shouldn't be surprised by now. This issue might be a "filler" or a "breather" issue in between big stories, but it's done in a very nice way. It sets up some future plot points, introduces a new character & shows the status quo of some of the main guys in a seemless entertaining package.
It also shows what happens to the Green Lanterns who bite the dust (even the insect ones) as they are entered into what looks like hologhraphic crypt, complete with creepy lokin' hooded Crypt Keeper. I'm not sure what the point of the flying purple dragons (Dratures?) in the crypt was, though. That seemed pretty random to me.
The new character introduced is found in said crypt, talking with the dead Lanterns Haley Joel Osment style, and this new talent turns out to be very handy by the end of the book, where he identifies the 'big bad' of future issues.
There was a scene with Kyle & Guy's new Warriors bar, that I liked a lot and Tomasi's detail in what it takes to pour a good beer made me think he must have really worked in a bar. The drawing Kyle did, that Guy finds in the trash (why is he pulling stuff out of the trash??) was pretty interesting too, and makes me wanna know more.
The art was nice, nothing spectacular, but very solid. The page of Mongul escaping the Black Mercy planet, and the page with the raining eye balls were the highlights for me. There is a lot of different things to draw in book that contains so many aliens and other odd shit & I think Luke Ross showed he can handle it all. It's good stuff.
I really like this book, and if a "filler" issue can be this entertaining, it says a lot about the series & how good the writer is. Tomasi is becoming one of my favourite writers working today.
Definitely pick this issue up, if you're a fan of the series or a new reader, it's a good time to jump on.
But ... 'm still very confused about those Dratures ...
Art: 4 - Very Good
This was the best issue of GLC in a while – really, really good. Great cover, too.
Hey Mate, The Cryptkeeper was introduced in the GL corp secret files and origins issue which was released just after the end of the Sinestro Corp War. To echo Conor this issue was awesome. More should pick it as their pick of the week.
The new character I was talking about being introduced was Lantern Saarek, the dude in the crypt with the Crypt Keeper. I guess I wasn’t very clear about that. My bad.
