If you only read Geoff Johns’s Green Lantern (which I will admit is very very good) and not reading Tomasi’s Green Lantern Corps, I think you’re missing out on some terrific Green Lantern stories here.  And if you love cop shows or space epics (preferably both)?  For get about it, you’ll love this book.  After a fantastic story arc centering around Mongul last time, we get to see the two major players, Earth Lanterns Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner, on their off-time.  We also see the old cop show staple, the cop bar, make a debut on Oa courtesy of Guy’s Warriors Bar.  As we see the camaraderie and brotherhood of the Corps, Tomasi gives us enough warm fuzzies over Guy discussing the inner workings of Black Mercy farts and subtle Kyle/Natu flirtations to where when the drama hits, it hits hard.

The central plot for the new arc comes into focus as we are introduce to Saarek, the Green Lantern who talks with dead folks.  Like the last few issues, GL Corps isn’t afraid to turn up the gore in a particular heart-wrenching and horrifying scene that’s painful to watch even if the intended targets of the tragedy are so far nameless rookies.  It’s this kind of character development coupled with gut-wrenching action that makes this space epic/cop drama book so compelling to me.

A talent that I hope will be getting more recognition very shortly, Peter Tomasi gives a start to what will hopefully be another wonderful and excellent tale of the Green Lanterns that are not Hal Jordan.  Joining him for this story is guest artist Luke Ross whose artwork is very clean and realistic, making the light scenes very warm and the heavy scenes very horrific.  Together, the two have created the start of a tale that looks like it will be a winner just as the last arc was.

  1. It’s so good to see the Warrior bar back. And Guy with a purpose other than just being "the caustic one." His marketing advice to Kyle? Great stuff. My only concern? My only question now is when are we going to see the first GL bar brawl and who’s going to get clocked?
