Guy Gardner and Jon Stewart just want an everyday job. Never mind that they are members of the Green Lantern Corps and there’s a massive amount of baggage that comes with it. “Green Lantern Corps” #1 is a pretty fun book than focuses on Guy and Jon while also developing a pretty cool space threat in Space Sector 3599. As a whole, I found myself enjoying this quite a bit.
There’s no doubt that Peter Tomasi knows these characters and they are really well written. But the whole idea of trying to find day jobs on earth seemed a little wacky. That being said, we do see Tomasi use it to show how both guys feel disconnected from their home planet. So even while it’s a little corny, it’s sold pretty well and gives new readers a better look at these two key characters. I liked how this was a more traditional Green Lantern book, minus all of the colored lanterns. It looks as though the story is going to be a simple “Green Lantern Corps versus a genocidal space threat” arc and I kind of like that.
The best part of this issue was clearly the artwork of Fernando Pasarin. The violent but visually stunning opening sequence instantly drew me in. I love his attention to detail particularly in the gorgeous environments. I was also impressed by Gabe Brosseau’s rich, vibrant colors. They serve as a wonderful compliment to Pasarin’s rich, realistic style. This is a great looking issue.
While the story is good, it didn’t blow me away. But I have to say Fernando Pasarin’s art did. The story doesn’t feel like a relaunched title yet it does seem to be an introduction of sorts. Regardless I still find myself intrigued enough about where the issue ends and when combined the sharp look of the book, I’m on board.
Art: 5 - Excellent
