Little kid by the name of Hal watches his father, a test pilot, blow-up right in front of his eyes. Hal grows up and becomes a test pilot himself, gets a Green Lantern ring, saves the universe, yadda-yadda-yadda. His origin is just as well-known (well, to me at least) as Batman's, so why does Geoff Johns think we need another origin story?
Because Geoff Johns is a genius, that's why.
Okay so my review might be a little bias because Green Lantern is my all-time favorite superhero, and I couldn't think of anyone else but Johns on the book, but this origin story had to be told by Johns. He's able to add more depth to the Jordan family, and show the relationships between Hal and his brothers. You have the older brother who thinks Hal is bad news, and then you have the younger brother who really looks up to Hal.
With Abin Sur or Sinestro not yet meeting Jordan, the next few issues aren't coming out fast enough in my opinion. With the upcoming The Blackest Night event in 2009, it'll be interesting to see if Sinestro and Hal will once again be reunited as partners, like we're about to observe in the next issues.
Bravo Mr. Johns, bravo.
