With last month’s great finale of the first arc entitled “The Dastardly Death of the Rogues,” Geoff Johns takes a step away from Barry Allen for this issue and issue 8 (which is on sale in two weeks), and focuses on the newly resurrected Captain Boomerang (George “Digger” Harkness). Johns focuses on Boomer’s backstory for new readers who aren’t familiar with the character and why he’s back from the dead (with his new energy boomerang powers). Which Digger is trying to figure out for himself. And to do so he tries to get some answers from the speedster of the 25th century Professor Zoom a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash (Eobard Thawne).

This issue’s art is amazing with Scott Kolins stepping in for Francis Manapul, Kolins brings the same style that he used previously in the Flash Facts sections of the past issues of The Flash, as well as his work on DC Universe Legacies and his new run on Justice Society of America. Now having not read all of Johns and Kolins’ previous work on The Flash (with minor exceptions in the Final Crisis: Rogues Revenge, Blackest Night: Flash, Flash Secret Files: 1, and Flash: Blood will Run trade) I very much enjoyed the break before the next arc with Manapul.

Also, as a side note Darwyn Cooke’s variant cover for the issue is simply put awesome on a whole other subject. It is one of the DC 75th Anniversary Covers which is based on the original Flash Vol. 1 #139 (the first appearance of the Reverse-Flash). And for the price of $4.99 it was a great buy. Hopefully somewhere down the road when Cooke’s finished with his Parker series it would be so cool if he drew an arc.

All in all, this issue was a great read for fans and as well as new readers alike, and with the next issue coming out in two weeks we get to see the aftermath of what happens with Captain Boomerang and Prof. Zoom. And what it truly means to break one of the Rogues’ Rules.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. How is it that he has the ability to charge his boomerangs now, did the White Lantern give that to him?  Reminds me of Gambit.

  2. He creates energy boomerangs because of the white lantern
