So far I have really enjoyed this new run on Flash. I can finally see why it’s always good to have a Flash comic. (At least a good one anyways) Geoff Johns writing Barry Allen should be a no brainer at this point. Then we have Manapul….who I secretly want to marry. This title should continue the good train going right?

Well…..Look this isn’t a bad issue by any stretch of the imagination. It’s fun to read and Johns take on the Barry/Iris relationship is spot on. However, the stuff in the beginning with the CCPD felt very rushed. Why didn’t Johns let Barry be on the run (heh, pun) with his public identity for murder? That would’ve been a very interesting idea to play on but instead, it all gets swept under the rug very quickly (two puns!). Then the fight (if you call it that) with the Renegade Rogues just didn’t click with me. There was no ‘wow’ sequence in this. The first issue had the car chase, the second with the apartment building, here? Nothing. In fact, Captain Boomerang seemed to have more cool moments here then the titled character.

Manapul still does some gorgeous stuff here. His panels involving Barry outside the costume are getting much better. The backgrounds are beautiful and the painted quality makes it more vibrant. When we get the ‘fight’, he does handle it very well. He handles how Flash moves very efficently. It feels like there is a flow of his movement and not just the simple ‘draw several body outlines behind him’. If there is any reason to pick this series up, it’s because of Manapul.

Again this wasn’t a bad issue, but I felt like it read a bit too fast (for a third time!). Everything does get even with the brilliant Flash Facts pages. Seriously I was loving those things and I hope they continue. Other then that though, there really wasn’t much to really remember about this issue. Even with the gorgeous Manapul art….I’ll remember the Flash Facts pages more then the actual story.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. You rock dude. Good review, completely agree. Story is good, but not amazing. But Manapul? WOW. Every page is just gorgeous. I personally would love to see him on Ultimate Spiderman.
