The issue starts out with the Ray relaying the total and complete subjugation of humanity's free will to the Anti-Life Equation through every piece of technology at our fingertips. Computers, television sets, phones, radios, you name it. It lends itself to a feel that not only can the very things we depend on for news, comfort and entertainment be turned against us, but in their own ways put us under their thrall.
Earth's Superheroes (what little there are remaining) are divided, in hiding and scared out of their minds. These aren't the same New Gods as before. They're in new bodies now. The Apokolips New Gods have come back and without their New Genesis counterparts, The DCU finally realizes what they're up against. But they never stop fighting. Even when faced with potentially the end of their way of life, they never give up. Alan Scott truly has stepped up to the plate as an "elder statesman" and mobilizing the forces in the absence of the Trinity.
Barry and Wally's scenes, while brief, were both touching and tense. The kiss that frees Iris Allen from the Anti-Life Equation is an indicator to the importance of Flashes to this story or at least Barry Allen's resurrection.
The conversion of Dan Turpin into Darkseid was tough to watch. It reminds me of every horror story I've ever seen or read in which the detective or investigator becomes the very creature of darkness that he hunts. Final Crisis as a whole, in truth, has a Lovecraftian feel to it. Dark, evil beings arriving to destroy the world of man for no other reason than a feeling of entitlement. The sense that "I have every right to violate and destroy everything you hold dear. and you have no right to stop me" is very palpable.
It's taken a while for it to get to this point, but to be honest, Final Crisis #4 finally kicks everything into high gear. Every issue so far has ended on an increasingly hopeless moment. One after the other. But that's the running theme. The day evil won. But I am curious to see how DC will be able to bring balance back to the Uni or Multiverse.

This was a great read, and coupled with Submit, made for some great late night reading.
