Peter Parker and Johnny Storm have had a weird friendship over the years. They’ve either been close friends or indifferent friends for many years depending on the writer. Jonathan Hickman basically made Spider-Man a replacement for Storm since he got killed way back in his FF run. But now with Storm back he needs a place to crash since the Baxter Building is kinda in shambles. So let’s cue the music:

Can these two young men with superpowers live side by side without driving each other crazy?

This was one fun issue from beginning to end. It’s been a while since Hickman did a full on ‘humor’ issue of anything and that’s what this book is. There is no planet destroying armies, older members of the FF from the future, or some complex plot here. This issue is all about Peter trying to stay sane while letting Johnny live with him. A lot of people say Jason Aaron is great when he has no serious edge to him like in Wolverine and the X-Men. Well I say Hickman can be just as funny and adventurous when he doesn’t have a plot going either. From beginning to end this issue just made me laugh in all the predicaments Johnny puts Peter in. Whether it’s the disturbing outfit he wears while making breakfast, to the huge party he throws; a lot of great moments happen in this. I would LOVE to see Hickman try his hand at a doing an ongoing series with these two because he could hit comedy gold. I just love there is no lesson in this issue either except for the fact that Storm is a horrible person.

Nick Dragotta also really does a nice job with this issue. There are some wonky faces in this but I’m willing to ignore it this time because how he executes some of Hickman’s jokes. Again it is quite disturbing what Storm wears in the morning and I question his sexuality the way Dragotta draws him around Peter at times. His style is so old-school though, I can totally see this as a 60s issue of Fantastic Four or Spider-Man with Stan Lee writing the script. You do get some crazy science in this like the Negative Zone or Pete’s bizarre invention and Dragotta executes that very well with great detail. But the best page in this issue, by a mile, is the last one and without spoiling it let me just say….I don’t think even Mr. Stan Lee could think how low one of his creations would go in the hands of another writer. (Certainly the lowest point in this multi-dimension alien’s career)

It’s funny how Jonathan Hickman is ending his run and this is one of the last issues he’s doing for FF. It certainly doesn’t feel like Hickman is leaving any time soon with these gems he’s writing. This is a fun, funny, and a good time all around to read. But you also get some great, old-school art by Nick Dragotta to balance out the craziness in the script. This isn’t going to be an issue that will be remembered in the grand scheme of things for this great run on Fantastic Four. But it’s a damn good issue none the less.

  1. Being a huge spidey fan ive loved hickmans take on him . Ff is my pick

  2. really wouldnt mind a hickman and dragota spectacular spiderman book.

  3. Spot on review. This issue was just fun as hell, and a great change of pace from what has been going on in this book. Nice breather. It almost reminded me of the old “Assistant editor’s month” issues from back in the 80s. Good times. That last page? CLASSIC.

  4. Agreed on all counts. Great review.
