The kind of comic book that makes you want to shout from the rooftops about how fun it is, how clever it is, how much emotion it conveys. In many ways a departure from most of Hickman's run, in that there's no real sci-fi, none of the big ideas of his bigger opus. It's all characters and little moments. The idea itself isn't new, this kind of book has been done over and over. The trick is to do it well, because when an old trope is done well, it doesn't matter how often it's been used. Hickman rises to the challenge magnificently. The characters are bang on the money, the comedic elements are funny but never over the line, and are ideally suited to the book itself. It's very much a Spidey and Torch book, you could never just replicate the story with other characters. The alchemy in this story is only truly evident once paired with that art. Hickman's gotta have absolute faith that his artist can time this perfectly and Dragotta truly goes the extra mile. The ultimate proof of this is in the silent panels, or in those panels towards the end when Johnny's apparently talking to Mary Jane. You can really linger on these pages and soak up all those sweet extra details. Behind all the laughs there's even something deeper here about the relationship between Peter and Johnny. Long past those early days of really kind of hating each other, these two are clearly, truly friends. So much so that I think the main reason Spidey joining the FF worked was because you knew it was Peter trying to do something to honor his apparently deceased friend. Trouble is they're also clearly not good for each other in close proximity on a daily basis, and this story ends the only way it really can...
