Story by Matt Fraction
Art by Mike Allred

Very little happens in this comic. I don’t mean that in a bad way though, because what does happen has meaning, humour and heart. The narrative style is interesting, as it starts with Val and Franklin describing the Future Foundation to the reader (point of view style). At the end of the issue you find out exactly why.

Fraction’s writing is fun and light (the scene with Darla and Johnny Storm was my highlight – “ask someone about the thing”), and oh my god Mike Allred’s art. I’ve seen both ends of the spectrum about it, but if you like it then you’ll love it here. He gets to draw every type of character, all of the FF kids and they all look fantastic (apart from Ben Grimm maybe, but this is just personal taste perhaps). Laura Allred on colours does a fantastic job too, excellent bright colours that fit Mike’s pop art style.

Fun, sweet and tinged with moments of sadness, FF is a great read. I can’t wait for the plot to really kick in now that the team is 3/4 assembled.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I have no prior experience with the FF, or the Fantastic Four, but F4 prompted me to buy this book, and I LOVED it! Hella funny, a great introduction to the characters (perfect for a newcomer like me.), and well told. Fraction does a great job with the pitch, and the Allreds knock it out of the park. Great review. I’m on board!

  2. I used to be willing to accept people saying Allred’s art isn’t good because I understood that his style is “special” and won’t appeal to everyone.

After seeing this issue, I’m no longer willing to accept that Allred’s art is anything less than great.
