The problem with Fear Itself is that this is not the story we were promised. From the pre-release interviews and solicitations it seemed that this would be a dark, character-driven parallel to the weight of financial crisis and war weighing on today’s society. What we got was giants hitting each other with hammers. There’s simply nothing poignant or resonant about this series. However, that’s not to say there’s nothing to like about this comic. Immonen’s art is staggering and is some of the best I’ve seen from him and the action is well-paced and exciting. I think I’ve been enjoying Fear Itself not because it’s any kind of masterpiece, but because my expectations for event comics is in the toilet. Is this the best series of the year? Not by a long shot. But it’s better than people think.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
