I never read one bit of JSA so I don’t have any nostalgia for them. That being said, I really like this book. Robinson is doing a great job of giving us the apocalyptic sacrifice from issue #1 and then diving headfirst into building the team. But–very important here–

Alan Scott is not “revealed” as gay. There’s no mystery-tension-build up. He just is who he is. Just like any person who happens to be gay, in addition to having blonde hair. You get the point.

The last 2 panels literally made gasp a bit. I like it when I’m surprised–it’s a good sign. A well-executed cliffhanger.

The world of Earth is just plain interesting. I actually care about what’s happening. Robinson and Scott have created a very personal, intimate, “real(?) world.

It’s a welcome contrast to the bombastic EVENTS we seem to be constantly bombarded with.

There is an authentic Heroic feel to how the team is coming together–but without the one-liner wisecracks featured so heavily in the Justice League origin arc.

The seemingly random insertion of Mr. Terrific with no pick up later in the issue was the only hiccup. I’m confident Robinson can make Mr. T interesting. Somebody needs to.(God knows the defunct relaunched book didn’t…I actually read all 8 issues of that. Not good.)

Next issue, the full birth of the Green Lantern –SPOILER ALERT — I have a bad feeling they’re going to kill off Alan’s boyfriend.

My POTW.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. Wasn’t sure about Earth 2 based on the first issue but this one definitely sparked more interest. Flash creation was pretty cool and need to see the next layer in creating Green Lantern so will be grabbing next issue for sure.

  2. Man I hope they don’t stuff Alan’s boyfriend in a fridge…

    • I hope so too, it’s just that the set up was very Whedon-esque….everything’s great….love in the air…and the bullet train your explodes into a raveen….now the love of your life is dead and you have some SERIOUS issues/motivations.
