After a huge discussion on whether or not my LCS sucks and will actually get this issue for me….here it is in full glory and my review.

Image is a company I am rather iffy about. I love Walking Dead as much as the next guy but when it comes to the other powerhouses like Invincible or Savage Dragon I could care less ago it. But when I was reminded on that Image has it’s own superhero ‘team’ well I had to see what made this Dynamo 5 team look so good. Now this is a zero issue; in theory it should provide new readers context on what’s going on in this universe and showcase on why this team kicks ass.

Well I got none of that here. Oh sure there is a battle in this issue and that there is a mini conversation at the first page of this zero issue….But I felt no reason why I should care about these characters. To me they feel like a clone of the Teen Titans; there’s the spunky leader, the african american member, the goth chick, and two other members I could care less about. I would love to have seen more reason on why this team stood out above the rest in comic book teams but I found none of that here. We get the same boring powers like telekinesis, a strong person, and other boring powers you’ve seen time and time again. What really got me pissed about this zero issue was the text at the end. I’m sorry but I would think a recap of the series so far should’ve been the comic itself and not a two page text. Not only is it small to read and hard to follow; it just left me bored as anything and I thought to myself ‘why the hell should I care?’

This was 99 cents but even if it is a cheapo price I would think Image would’ve done a better job showcasing this team for the new readers. All I got was a random conversation that has little emotions to the characters; a boring fight that just ended too quickly, and two pages of text which I know for a fact text in comics is like putting censorship on a porno. Sure it looks nice at first, but then you get annoyed you arent seeing the good stuff and you just turn off the channel (or in this case close the comic) without a second guess. Maybe I’ll give this series a try in trade but if it feels as cold and unwelcoming as this zero issue did….then I doubt this comic will do it for me.

  1. Man,…..I just picked this up and its my first D5 issue.  That review makes me want to take it back.  Maybe I’ll get the first trade before i read this.

  2. @twooldridge-Judge for yourself first.  If this site teaches you anything, its that TNC is not always right.

I find it odd that you complained about the recap pages.  Those are always helpful for new readers.  Would you expect them to tell you all this in the story?  You have any idea how wordy and boring the entire issue would be if they did that?  They want readers to feel comfortable moving forward and picking up the next issue, if they chose to, without having read the first 19 issues.

I think you might be judging this too harshly based on your anger towards people ragging on your LCS.

  3. @drake: First, I know my opinion isnt always right…never did I say in my review or talking about the issue did I say it was.

Second, my anger with the LCS discussion didnt even factor into this review. So it’s sad to think that you turn me into that type of angry troll I am not.

This zero issue did not make me into a fan. It didnt suck me into the world nor did it provide with me a backstory credible enough for me to get into the trades at least. This just felt like watching a cartoon series in midseason and expecting to know all the characters, their traits, their allies and villians, and their mysteries. I cant say that I read the first trade of this series yet; but I feel that the first volume will probably be more accessible to new readers then this.

Course that is just my opinion.

  4. I’m a D5 fan, but I’m sad to say that I agree with TheNextChampion’s review.  When I picked it up, I was sort of miffed that the book didn’t have "$.99 – Great Jump On Point!!" in big letters on the cover to try and bring in new readers.  After I read it, I’m glad it didn’t.  Pick up the first trade because this issue isn’t going to cut it.

Although this issue was ok for a D5 issue, this was not a very good introductory book at all.  It’s basically all new ideas / plots with some quick recaps of the character’s powers.  It could’ve served as a much better intro issue if it was mainly character dialogues for several pages recapping the story leading up to the beginning of a fight at the end of the issue.

I also didn’t care to see 2 solid pages of text at the back of this.
