Snyder’s Detective Comics run is like one of those fancy ass cakes they make on the Food Network. It looks great with all sorts of crazy artsy shit all over it that you know took a long as time to make. But then you take a bite out of it and it tastes the same as the $10 cakes at Costco. Jock is killing it on the art (just look at the cover) but there isn’t anything that interesting going on besides that. Snyder drudges some part of Batman’s past, Batman fights it while remembering some part of his past, and then finally some guy from his past who is clearly evil does some evil shit. Business as usual. It’s done very well, if a bit stretched out. I get the feeling that Paul Dini could have made this three issue arc into a one-shot without losing much in the process (besides cramping up Jock’s art a bit). Also, I find it interesting that Tim Drake is the sidekick in the book. Guess having a ten year old Robin only works if you’re Grant Morrison.
