Although I may not always agree with the specific choices of IFanboy POTWs, I usually find that I agree with most of the opinions that Josh, Ron and Connor have on the variety of different titles they discus each week. Only in a few cases have I ever been really disappointed by titles I have picked up on the show’s reccomendation. I don’t get their enthusiasm for GI Joe books, for example, or for Chew, which the guys raved about so earnestly I actually shelled out big bucks for the shiny Omnivore Edition hardcover, only to discover that, for me, it was one of the most boring, badly drawn books I had come across in quite some time.
Now, I’m sad to say, I can add former POTW Demon Knights to that short list of disappointments. And I am sad to say that because I really wanted to like this book. I liked what I had seen of Cornell’s writing previously, but after this and the appalling Stormwatch it will be a long time before I try one of his books again. I love the characters Cornell has to play with here – Matt Wagner’s work on Etrigan way back when, and more recently on Madame Xanadu, as well as Grant Morrison’s re-imagining of the Shining Knight, are some of my favourite comics. So I really would have expected better. But, although I have to admit I enjoyed the artwork in this issue, there is so little story, so little character development, and so little to intrigue me here, that I’m cutting this from my pull list for next month and probably won’t come back to it at any point soon.
Boy, I would have liked to see these characters done right. What a missed opportunity…..
