Hey its Marvel doing a parody of their own numbering! With Deadpool #900 we get a bunch of creators writing their own way of the merc with the mouth. Being a giant sized issue this should be a great time for all for the fans. Or will it? Guess it's time for my patient:
Pellet Reviews!
Close Encounters of the @*#$ed-Up Kinds: (Jason Aaron/Chris Staggs) Jason Aaron writing a Deadpool story? Hallejuah should be playing right now. Sadly, this was pretty weak on a whole. Sure Deadpool being an alien abductee victim could be funny, but sadly Aaron's sense of humor doesn't work for me here. The drill bit was kinda funny but other then that it was pretty dull. Then you get the ugly artwork of Chris Staggs; who I thought was Paco Medina cause it looks so close on the surface. But then you can see it's a sketchy and uneven mess. Shame, this might be the worst of the entire issue.
Silent But Deadly: (Fred Van Lente/Dalibor Talajic) I've always like silent issues with comics, don't ask me why but I do. Seeing Deadpool fight a bunch of mimes is pretty funny, especially the things they are mimicing (like cooking up a grenade). The plot is a little hard to follow, only because I don't know why the mimes are acting like this. The artwork by Talajic is pretty damn impressive. Everything just flows naturally and any confusing I might have with the plot is solved with his panel sequence. I hope we see more of Talajic in the future.
Deadpool Shrunken Master: (Mike Benson/Damion Scott) With the 'Games of Death' one shot out earlier; you all know I am not a fan of Benson on this character. (Yes I have yet to read Suicide Kings) But this was a pretty interesting story with Wilson trying to get some mental help, or is he? This is helped with Scott's artwork which shows the mind of Wilson and almost every single panel is slightly different from the last. It's a bit too sketchy for my liking but it still is a good story overall.
Pinky Swear: (Joe Kelly/Rob Liefeld) Oh this is porn for me, absolute Deadpool porn. I get an early gift of seeing the best writer and best artist to ever work for the character. If you ever read the 90's Deadpool series then you know how funny Kelly can get. This is just downright funny; from the various winks to the audience on past Deadpool stories, to just funny banter. I love the sequence with Lloyd arguing with his wife because it's just so realistic. Then you get Liefeld's art and it just takes me back to the good old days of Liefeld. Yes I can hear people crying out that his artwork might seem dated. But this is some of Liefeld's best work, seriously. Everything just looks polished and the action sequences are beautiful to look at. This makes me miss Kelly and Liefeld more so and I hope we can see these two come back soon with the character. In terms of pure nostaligia this was my favorite out of the bunch.
What Happens in Vegas...: (Duane Swierczynski/Shawn Crystal) If we're talking about pure humor, then this is the best story out of the bunch. A fantastic parody of CSI and being a huge fan of the series, Swierczynski nailed the parody. There's also just funny jokes with Wilson narrating and that chicken...well he'll explain why the chicken is always there. Then we get Crystal's artwork and her did the Pirate arc just recently for Deadpool. It's a nice cartoony style and it totally works for this type of story. I would love to see these two try an entire arc of Deadpool in the future. Cause this was just pure bliss for humor sake.
Great Balls of Thunder on the Deep Blue Sea: (Victor Gischler/Sanford Greene) Another writer I am very indifferent on writing the character. I dropped the 'Merc with the Mouth' comic and seeing who wrote this I wasn't too keen on reading. Sadly my expections stayed the way it was and this was a pretty ho-hum story. The last panel is really funny but other then that, not really a highpoint for the issue. Greene's artwork is pretty good, kinda reminds me of artwork in the 'Marvel Adventure' line.
One Down: (Charlie Huston/Kyle Baker) This was a pretty unqiue story, as it's Deadpool discussing his popularity and how Marvel is whoring him out. He basically leads us into his mission: killing every single Deadpool fan so he can finally rest in peace. It's an interesting concept and even as a fan I must admit Huston is pretty much speaking the truth. Not a fan of the Baker art though, which ruins the story for me a bit. He's trying to mix both realistic photographs and artwork (not rotoscoping mind you) and it comes off very ugly. It's a shame because this was a very good story but it gets hampered by the art really easily.
Then there are a few other extra's; a cover gallery (and a funny take on the other 700 issues we apparently missed) and a reprint of a Deadpool Team up story. The latter is a bit strange and it does feel out of place in this anniversary. But considering the major event coming for Deadpool next year; I think I know why we had to see the story of 'Widdle Wade' for this. Still, it does feel out of place as a whole and I wished we could've seen another short story.
This wasn't a bad 'anniversary' and there were some good stories. Pinky Swear and the Vegas story are worth the price tag alone because they were well done. But the other stories get hampered by either medicore writing or bad artwork. It doesn't help that the very first story with Jason Aaron was pretty bad, it lowers expectations for the rest of the issue. As a fan I can't say this was terrible on a whole. This could've been done much better though.
Art: 3 - Good
Great review. I originally wanted to get this issue just for the Kelly/Liefeld story, but the Huston story seems really interesting as well. I might pick it up next time at the comic shop.
I loved the Kyle Baker art. I’m a big fan of the Ralph Bakshi style of rotoscoping (like in American Pop) so this art was wonderful to me. This was my POTW, because with the exception of Victor Gischler’s pants-on-head retarted story, every single story here was extremely solid and a testament to why I absolutly love this character.
@comicbookchris: Was Baker using rotoscoping? Cause it looked more like 3D images then using real life objects. Either way, I thought it made the story look pretty ugly. When the guy wasn’t doing that, like Deadpool fighting T-Rex’s or reliving his past, it looked better though.
