So, I guess this was supposed to be issue 200, if we’re counting
Deadpool/Cable. It always makes me feel old and question if I still
need to read comics when books I remember first coming out have
anniversaries like this. Still, it was a nice unique way of turning the
trope of spectacle issues on it’s ear by saying hey, we don’t care what
the number on the outside, we’re just going to try to have fun. And
this issue was fun, if nothing else. They got a good amount of talent
to do short stories. I love that Joe Kelly came back as he has only
gotten better with the passage of time. I thought the first story was
pretty cool. Actually most of the stories were pretty well written. I
didn’t like the shrink story, as it just felt too slow. I think the art
was all over the place. It was probably the best work Liefeld has put
in in quite a long while, but it was still laughable every now and
then. I really didn’t like the Kyle Baker story as it seemed too
introspective and moody for Wade and the art looked like character
designs for a Sims game. I also would have preferred not having the
Widdle Wade story reprinted when they could have done the far more
entertaining Encyclopedia deadpoolica where Wade feeds meatloaf to
vegetarian. Still, Marvel’s anniversary books have yet to really
disappoint me and they always have a good bang for the buck, even if
this issue was about 50/50 on the hit to miss scale.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 2 - Average

  1. I know that it’s not really fair to judge success based on expectations, but this was a really disappointing issue. The shear amount of talent involved should have lead to a better issue. Too much of the DP as a one-dimensional character joke and not enough exploration of what makes DP tick.
