After the first issue ended and making it my Pick of the Week, Deadpool certainly seems close to being revived as a great character once again. The humor and art in the issue made me enjoy it to no end and I couldnt wait for this one to come out. Well it isnt my Pick of the Week this week, although close it was to be, but this is yet another sign that this series is up for great things.
Let's put this out of the way first, I'm in love with Deadpool. It makes me a little bias but the merc with the mouth can be one of the best Marvel characters around, if he's written right. Well Daniel Way certainly knows how to give perfect jokes, moments, and overall an entertaining time with Deadpool. It hits a little snag in the beginning becuase of the (rule of comics #1) backstory given in the first five pages....But the balls rolls again once we see the Skrulls cloning, and amazingly letting Deadpool train his own clones. This was the highlight of the whole issue; with him teaching them bad jokes, self-mutlization, andeven learning to shoot each other in the head. It's obvious that something isnt right with this training, well surprise to me because that last page with Nick Fury was something I didnt see coming.
The art keeps the funny stuff coming with a cartoonish vibe for Deadpool. Although crisp and clean, it certainly feels like your watching a cartoon. Even if Pool-O-Vision is seen once (sorta hinting the double cross here) it's great to see something totally out of left field, even for Deadpool.
So after two issues in it might be safe to say that this is going to be a great run with Way on board. He knows how to write Deadpool, the art fits the style of the book, and overall it is a fun time all around when reading this. Some say it hurts this series that it has to start off as a tie-in arc, but I say this series will work in it's own right once we get the invasion out of the picture. I havent been this happy for a Deadpool book since....well since the first Cable & Deadpool issue so many years ago. Dont miss this funny and entertaining book at your LCS, you'll regret that you did.
Art: 4 - Very Good
The direct shot at "you know who" in the pouches gag? I had to put the book down I was laughing so hard.
I would have to say the best joke is:
Isnt that right rob?-Deadpool
Who’s Rob?-Skrull 🙂
That’s what I was referring to. 🙂
Great issue. This easily could have been my pick of the week, if it weren’t for the great close to Brubaker’s Captain America opus.
Is this Way’s first Marvel book? If so, Marvel is doing an incredible job of amassing talent. Brubaker, Bendis, Millar (finally growing on me), Aaron, Straczinski, and now Way – yeah, man.
@Coltrane: Not sure it’s his first, but his did Wolverine: Origing for an arc called ‘Deadpool’. You can guess what that is about. It was really good, actually it seems like a beta run on what Way is doing now on this title. The only time I’ll recommend something from Wolverine: Origins.
@coltrane Way also did Ghost Rider. but it wasn’t nearly this good. Aaron does better on GR but Way seems like a deadpool genius.
