I didn't love the first issue as much as most of the iFanboy staff, but I still loved it. I thought it was an interesting story, and was curious what direction the next issue would take, given that they killed the main character at the end of the last one.
It appears that this series is going to be Variations On The Death Of Bras. Once again, the story focuses on Bras, and his friend Jorge. And, again, we're treated to his death at the end of the issue.
This issue is best encapsulated by a page where Bras is speaking with Olinda, a girl he meets on a boat, who convinces him to stay in town for a festival. He asks her, conversationally, "So, what do you do for a living?" and she replies with "My job won't tell you who I am. And especially not what I want."
Issue one focused on Bras writing obituaries, and was the death of an obitary writer. Here, we don't see Bras's job at all. This is him at play, seeing the sites with his friend Jorge who is a photographer. But photographer is more than just his job, it's what he loves.
Maybe I'm being overly meta, but it feels as though Ba and Moon are speaking to the reader a bit here. I don't think writing/drawing comics is their job, either. I think it's something they love, that they happen to be paid for. And the love for the medium really bleeds through in this comic.
If you didn't read the first issue of this comic, go back to your LCS and find it, there are probably still copies around. Read them back to back, and you really appreciate how both issues get to the core of who Bras is as a person, and yet they tell two entirely different stories. I can't wait to see what they have in store for issue three.
