I never really understood the ‘Moloids’ whenever they cropped up in a Marvel comic. I know they are pretty much slaves to the Mole Man, but their history is kind of hazy to me. (Let’s see Jeff Reid do an article on them!) They don’t bother me in the sense that they annoy me, they have been used to interesting use in previous stories. But their purpose in issues seem so small I wonder why they should be there. Leave it to Mark Waid to make use of the Moloids in a more sinister role.

This issue was kinda sick in two ways: First off the Moloids are seriously creepy in this. If they aren’t carrying coffins they are literally running the speed of light and attacking like fucking bats. It helps that Paolo Rivera draws them with huge fangs and just run at Daredevil with no disregard with what’s in front of them. The sickest, and second, moment in this issue? Mole Man dancing with a corpse. Oh boy that’s just fucking terrifying isn’t it? I literally screamed ‘Whoa!’ when I saw that. Mark Waid can make a fun issue of Daredevil no doubt about it, but sometimes you forget he can literally switch the tone of any title on a dime. The rest of the issue is fun to read, but it’s more about Rivera’s art this time round.

I liked the approach both Rivera’s did in this issue in that we never see a clear picture of anything once Daredevil is underground. Apart from the opening two page splash which is fucking gorgeous let’s be honest. But most of the issue we never see a good picture of Daredevil, the Moloids, or anything else for that matter. Which makes a hell of a lot of sense because, without proper lighting, you really can’t see anything underground. That and I also like how Daredevil can’t tell what the hell is around him. These huge monsters are all around him but because his radar vision, drawn beautifully as always, can’t detect them he thinks it’s an empty cave. This has been a great week for artists, for me at least, because it shows the nice touches both penciller, inker, and colorist can bring when working together. This issue of Daredevil is no different and once again shows why it is one of the best looking titles in the industry right now.

This issue was all about mood and Mark Waid, Paolo Rivera, and Joe Rivera delivered this month. From the dank caves, to the Moloids, to the disturbing moment of the week involving Mole Man; the mood is quite grim right now. Add in some small touches to the overall plot involving the device Murdock has with Black Cat and you got yourself one intriguing comic book. Can’t wait to see how these guys top themselves next issue.
