While this isn’t my Pick of the Week, I think a special award should go to Mark Waid this week. He made the Mole Man, a villain who has been one-note for many years, more interesting than the majority of his existence. How does Waid do it, you ask? Well how about making him a fantastic sword fighter?

That’s right ladies and gentlemen; the majority of this issue is a ‘sword’ fights involving: A man with limited vision using a cane, and the other is a blind superhero who also uses his cane. If that doesn’t make you rush out to buy this issue then you must be a little dead inside. It’s amazing how this guy, Mark Waid who I must remind you can be as grim and violent when need be in an issue, can come up with so much inventive stuff in this series. Unexpected cane fight, there was a lot to love about this issue. And not just from Waid’s fantastic imagination either…

A lot of love should go to Paolo Rivera who is definitely going to get an Eisner for his work here. (And if he doesn’t then I say we torch the building where they vote them) The opening sequence alone is Eisner-winning material with a very realistic depiction of a man inside the mouth of the beast. He’s blind so we get very little of what is going on, but what we can see is mighty disturbing. But then we get more light-hearted with the cane fight and I swear I could see Errol Flynn instead of Daredevil in some of those poses. (I definitely had the soundtrack blasting when I paused to continue reading) Big props should go to Joe Rivera and Javier Rodriguez too for making this look colorful and also keeping up with Rivera’s style respectively.

While this shockingly didn’t become my pick this week, there is definitely a lot to love here. Mark Waid continues to make Daredevil one of the best characters at Marvel right now with his mix of disturbing and also energetic scripts. Add in some of THE BEST art at Marvel with the two Riveras and Rodriguez and you got yourself yet another 5-star comic. Now if you excuse me I’ll be watching my copy of ‘Adventures of Robin Hood’ with Errol Flynn if anyone needs me.
