It has been awhile since Chew has made me giddy lately. Don't get me wrong, this has been an excellent series all the way through. But kinda like how Sweet Tooth was, it just felt like it was going along the same tracks. Or that you always knew that this was a great read but it never 'jumped' out at you. For this current issue of the series not only did it go off the rails....but I loved every page of it.
As the cover implies, somehow vampires are now in the mix of this universe. That takes a back seat to the real crux of the issue, chefs being kidnapped by the major of the island. Although the reason for it is very silly, it gives Layman a chance to play around with Tony Chu a bit more. I like it that Chu, as clumsy as he is, can be written to be a pretty darn good hero at times. This time he sneaks into the base to rescue everyone and I really felt that Chu is slowly, but surely, turning into a great hero to root for. As always there are a beavy of unique and hilarious moments in this. It's great to see Ms. Mintz (the lady who writes so accurately you can taste the food) and also a new character with a weird condition. This time, we have a chef who can tell a story (like Shakespeare) just by the food he makes. Here I keep thinking Layman is going to run out of ideas; but his imagination keeps going. Then we get to the final page and.....wait I'll save that for later.
Rob Guillery, you can take all the time you want with this series. I don't care. It's amazing how he can continue to bang out gems every single month. His unique and somewhat cartoony style makes this look like no other comic out there. His charactersd are insanely detailed but by a glance they look like something out of a saturday morning cartoon. He also lays out the action very well and again he makes Chu look more of a badass then ever before. I love the sequence with Tony getting somewhat more 'indifferent' with each panel as his brother claims he is in heaven. Then it ends with a hilarious, half page panel of knocking him out. I like that style of pacing because it keeps Layman's jokes work and it also makes the scenes more hilarious.
Then we get to the ending and.....well I don't wanna say those last two pages made this my pick this week but....it's hard to top what we see here. I love the narration boxes saying 'Cliffhanger' and getting more intense with each panel. Then the last page.....okay even with spoiler warnings on I don't wanna spoil it for anyone. Let's just say that it is hilarious and definitely a huge 'wtf?' moment. This solict says 'WTF....vampires?' but I think it should be used for this final page. Definitely one of the best issues of Chew in a long time. Again this has always been a great series, but Layman and Guillory put a bit more 'zing' to it to make it a worthwhile read.
Art: 5 - Excellent
This issue was damn fine. I agree with your assessment.
