I try not to judge a book by its cover. Or its solicit. So when I saw the poorly colored, giraffe-necked Carol Danvers on the front of this book, and saw the phrase “100% pure bad-a$$” (and, really, dollar sign “s”es?), I thought, “Well, it IS nice to see a female creator writing a female character for a change. I’m going to pick this up and give it a shot.”

This is a terrible book.

It really gives the impression that Marvel wants this title to tank. The characterization is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off for every character. The art is difficult to look at. It’s got that Dark Reign color pallet, and Dexter Soy has not yet come into his own as an artist. He might. I’m not saying he’s awful, but what’s in this book could be used in a clinic called “Poorly Drawn Anatomy”.

Arms hanging at angles that make them look unhinged, Captain America climbs the stairs in one panel as though he has shat himself and is trying to keep any more dookie from falling from between his legs. There is a really good looking hanging Spidey in this issue that shows promise, but as a whole this book just looks bad.

Writing ways, this story is ambitious. There’s a lot of humor that fell flat to me, and a sincere attempt to connect the reader to one of Carol’s heroes that didn’t resonate. I really wanted it to, but this whole issue came off as very amateurish. I hope it will improve. It would be nice if this creative team got a chance to grow on this project. Unfortunately, Marvel isn’t known for that sort of patience. If it was, we’d still have series like “Sword” and “Captain Britain MI-13”. Both of which had better beginnings than this issue of Captain Marvel.

  1. Thanks, that saved me some money.

  2. Wow, I came away from this comic with a completely different experience. I thought the story and characterization were excellent- really established Carol’s voice well. The art took some getting used to, but I found it beautiful by the end. Too each their own, I guess!

  3. I’m with frosty, I thought this was a very good first issue. I really don’t see how any of the characterization was off, especially with Ms. Marvel, it was pretty dead on in my opinion. It reminded me a lot of the early issues of the last Ms. Marvel series which I really enjoyed. I can see where someone wouldn’t dig the art, personally I liked it just fine (except for the cover).

  4. I’m in the same camp as frosty and cubman. I can’t speak to the mischaracterization of Carol Danvers, but Cap didn’t seem off to me.

And I liked the interior art, though it through me off at first.

  5. I liked it, not a five by any strech but, a one? No, 3.5 for me.

  6. Thought the whole thing looked like utter tripe!
