Story 5/5
I’m going to try to keep this review as spoiler free for as long as possible, but when I can’t hold back anymore, I’ll put a warning before I say anything too revelling. That’s why I’ve already given my rating as well. Because, even if you don’t want this book spoiled, I want you to know that it is fucking brilliant.
I know what your thinking so I’ll say it before you get a chance; I’m biased. I love spider-man. And I really love Ultimate Spider-Man. Its been my favorite on-going title for years now. So yes, on first glances I’m pre-determined to love this issue. But as a die-hard fanboy of these characters, I’m also more than likely to hate any attempt to change or advance the story in a way that doesn’t fit my interpretation of their world. This whole Death of Spider-Man arc that’s been playing out over the last few months had the potential of really pissing me off. Instead it continued the great tradition of quality and emotional storytelling that this book has always delivered.
When I first started buy this book 11 years ago ( I know, 11 years! Go check wikipedia, this book has been around forever and has almost always been great) I really enjoyed the art of Mark Bagley. He’d been a regular spider-man artist for years but his style was never really to my taste. It just always made me think of the early days of the clone saga and all its stupid characters and dull plot twists. Something about the ultimate universe seemed to suit his work though. It was young, colourful and bold. Soon it seemed hard to imagine Ultimate Spider-Man drawn by anybody else. And then the unthinkable happened. The longest running team in comics (Bagley paired with writer Brian Michael Bendis) broke up and the comic moved into different hands. This wasn’t the tragedy I originally expected though. The new artists where all fantastic. The work of Lafuente in particular was superb and soon it felt like Bagley had been surpassed. And then it was announced that the Death of Spider-Man arc was beginning and that Bagley would return. At first I was a little annoyed. His light-hearted, cartoony style didn’t seem to fit the story that could potentially see the end of my favorite character. Bagley’s style and attention to detail in this last few issues has been beyond fault though. Some of his renderings of Peter Parker in this issue are the best I have ever seen. In any Spider-Man comic. Ever. Bagley has come back and reclaimed this title as his own. Nobody knows these characters better and nobody else should have drawn these issues.
I bought this issue yesterday. I went straight back to my office, closed the door and read it. Then at the end of the day I went home and read it again. And right now I still feel like I could read it again.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The reason I will read this issue so many times is because of its emotional resonance. Both times I read this I felt choked up. After the fight ends and… (IN CASE YOU MISSED IT BEFORE: SPOILER WARNING!) Peter falls to the ground and lies dieing in the arms of his loved ones, I can’t imagine any fan of this series failing to be moved. His last words about how he failed to save Uncle Ben but managed to save Aunt May were really touching. Aunt may screaming “not him as well” reminds us that this woman that we’ve grown to love (which is amazing because I really don’t like the original Aunt May) has now seen everybody she has ever loved die horribly and I really felt her sorrow for a moment. And the last three panels that showed a (presumably) dieing Norman Osborn smiling really highlights that in the Ultimate universe anything can happen. The bad guys have won. Peter is dead.
Granted the whole thing could’ve been read as a little cliché. The last few words being quietly whispered, a hand goes limp and somebody screams “Noooooo!” up to the sky. I choose not to read it that way, but I can understand if you did read it that way. Its also quite easy to believe that Peter will return eventually, as all good comic charactors do. But ignore that for the time being. The ultimate universe has killed people before and maybe in this time of comic’s being cancelled and readership dropping, maybe this is the end for Peter. (or at least I’ll believe that so that when he returns I’ll get extra excited).
The thing that really stands out for me that is despite the super powered fight being over and the main character being dead. I still want to read about the supporting characters. I want to see Aunt May, Gwen and Mary Jane trying to continue their life. I want the next issue. I want to see what happens when the world knows that Peter was spider-man. I want to see their lives continue. And that proves that this book was so fantastically written, that I care for every single character in it. I hope that they will appear in the new Ultimate Spider-Man series as I can’t imagine reading comics without them. This may just be the end of one of the greatest series in the last 10 years. And it went out on a high note. How often can you say that?
