Oh Black Panther, what has Marvel done to you?

You are considered one of the more important characters of the Marvel U. Your land, Wakanda, is considered a major force on the planet. You have a wife that is a major member of the X-Men. For a time you were a major member of the Avengers. But why has Marvel sullied you so?

Now we have a Black Panther series where, the original is still a major focial point, but isn’t the hero now. We have your daughter taking over and suddenly she has to go to the U.S. for diplomatic reasons. I’ll admit I this is my first issue and I was a bit lost; but Hudlin does write the characters well. It’s mainly talking heads so it better be interesting to read in the first place. I’m not saying this is a perfect comic, writing wise, but it kept me interested without rolling my eyes. I hope there is a reason for this title existing other then showing this new and sexy Black Panther.

What I liked about this issue was the art. I don’t know who Will Conrad is but I love his work in this. His models are mostly good to look at; and his action scenes are pretty cool to look at. My only problem with this was the Obama appearence. Nothing political, but A) I’m tired of seeing him in comics and B) You could really tell Conrad just traces over a picture of the guy to get him on model. His fake smile will give me nightmares….Overall though it was a good looking comic.

I will give the first trade of this series a try. Just to see how we get to this moment for the original BP and this new female version. I’ve heard that Hudlin isn’t a great choice for this comic around the web. But as a first time try for him and his series; I’m on board for at least a trade or two.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I been reading BP since he was in the New FF and have been following this, however, I think I’ll have to drop it.

  2. For me this is classic case of a good book that went bad due to an event. When Hudlin started this with the invasion of Wakanda and then the Blakc Avengers stuff it was really interesting take on this aspect of the MU, but Civili War derailed it. Jason Aaron’s double issue for Secret Invasion looked to have gotten it back on track but the last arc was awful. This book really needs to get back on track soon or I’m dropping it. It’s a real shame becasue there were some graet ideas hidden in here but they’re just not being realised.
