I probably came in to this book with slightly lowered expectations, but I would have to say that Tony Daniel's first attempt at the writer's pen was much better than I expected it would be.  That's not to say this is without flaws.  Robin's narration is excessive, and at some points sounds very awkward.  Batgirl was mentioned but never appeared, although I don't know if I can really blame Daniel for this, since the character has always been treated this way.  I was also struck by some of the characterization.  Robin referring to Batman as father, while not untrue, took me out of the story for a moment.  Damien acting more afraid than petulant weighed more than it should have, but you could probably explain this away by saying he was either afraid or his pride had been hurt.  Nightwing is cast a bit different than normal as well, but it's completely appropriate given the situation.  On the more positive side of things, Robin giving voice to the detective aspect of this story read quite pleasantly, for the most part, Black Mask's sudden appearance struck me as quite interesting, and as a bonus the whole "who is he?" factor was not leaned on heavily, as one would fear it might be.  Jason Todd (presumably) also makes an inevitable appearance to cap off the issue, but it is not clear if he's the same mystery Batman referred to throughout the issue, and that's mystery enough for me.  Although Daniel's wordiness is forgivable, as it a common problem of fledgling writers to overplay dialogue and narration, the art is beautiful despite feeling ever so slightly rushed.  Some of the layouts are amazing, with a favorite of mine being the overlay when Gordon first appears.  I'm hoping Daniel improves as this goes along, because I doubt by review will be as forgiving come the next issues if the same problems exist but, for now, although I'm not blown away, I'm certainly happy to have my initial fears soothed.
