I miss Batgirl's solo comic.  I miss her being a character instead of just a prop or a plot device.  The trouble is like a lot of good books not enough people were reading it, so DC ended it and decided to recycle Cassandra Cain as a villain for Robin.  For no reason that has been yet explained she stopped fighting crime, killed one of Ra's Al Ghul's daughters and took over the League of Assasins and started to try to get Robin to join her running that League.

Now she's in Batman and the Outsides, and she's the reason I'm buying the book.  The trouble is there's been no explanation as to why after going through such work to take over the League of Assasins she has apparently given that life up to become Batgirl again.  Maybe it was explained when she joined Deathstroke's Titans East to attack the Teen Titans awhile ago.  No  wait it wasn't.  A character with a great deal of personality, who is fun and funny in her own skewed way, is back to just being a prop in the Batman universe.  The Batmobile has more character development than she's gotten in the past few years.

Which is the trouble with the book, nobody really acts like they're a character.  They're all props.  Green Arrow joins the team and immediately hates Batgirl.  Why?  Because she was a villain, though by now Green Arrow has had to have had some experiance with a hero temporarily being a villain, and unless I missed something he and evil Batgirl never even met.  But if he hates her they the two of them can have a fight in the middle of the book and kill an aligator, so they went with him hating her.

Maybe all this makes sense to a fan of the Outsiders, but as an.. erm... outsider to the book I'm looking for characters to latch onto and failing to find them.  This Green Arrow isn't the same one that's in Judd Winick's book (maybe he's a Skrull), this Batgirl isn't the same one that I enjoyed in her own solo book and Batman is basically in the Oracle role and apart from everything.  The other characters figure in things so lightly that I've still not got a sense of them after four issues.

But I do miss Batgirl.
