I dropped out of comics sometime post Secret Invasion two or three years ago. The New 52 has been my means to reenter the money sinkhole that is direct comics. During week one I was a little underwhelmed, but this week I read the first book on my stack, Batman and Robin #1 and was so into it that I stopped immediately to jump on iFanboy and write a review.

Now, I’m aware that this is probably a pretty standard comic book, but I missed the entire Batman and Robin title in my comics lapse and the entire voice of this thing seemed very refreshing. The odd villain in the opening scene, the playful back and forth between Batman and Damian, and an action scene that I was actually engaged in, which is something I rarely experience in comics. I know of Tomasi as an editor but I don’t think I’ve ever read any of his writing. That will have to change.

The only weak point was a dialogue/character study that went on a little long, but I was still interested as I read on. It was well written, but it made its presence a little too known, if that makes any sense.

Oh, and beautiful art from Patrick Gleason who I also haven’t heard of.

Great writing there, guy!
