By god, he’s done it again. I’m talking of course about Grant Morrison and his ability to weave a plot that seems completely nonsensical and packed with red herrings and non sequiturs, and then provide that one magical moment of clarity that brings it all together. This story seems to epitomize Morrison’s mad style more than anything else he has done, however, by using the Joker as that moment of clarity. In the midst of new characters, bizarre villains, and references to Batman comics from 1958, our old friend the Joker swoops in to provide some much needed exposition. How ironic, that in the middle of madness and insanity from all sides, the character perceived as the most insane, and the most unhinged makes the reader feel grounded for the first time in months. It gives new weight to my argument that the Joker truly is not insane, and that he may in fact be the most sane that a man could be in this world of the Batman.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Good point about the Joker being the grounding force in this issue. I wouldn’t say he’s the most ‘sane’ character in Batman’s world, but he’s definitely the most consistent. Batman can always count on Joker to do whatever he wants with no regard to human life. And the Joker could always count on Batman to try and stop him, without killing him, which is probably why he got so pissed when that Batman imposter shot him in the face.

  2. The Joker being the one to explain Morrison’s story & understanding it makes perfect sense to me. 🙂

  3. I just don’t know what to say about Tony Daniel’s art. Am I the only one who reviewed this ish and didn’t give it a 5? I just don’t get why people seem to love his art so much…

  4. I gave it a 4. Mostly for Le Bossu’s monolgue scene. That was great storytelling on both Grant and Tony’s pary. One of the very few instances in this story I consider brilliant.
