I was going to write a tirade complaining about the New 52, but honestly this book was too good not to talk about it. The art in both the main feature and the backup was fantastic as usual. The main story really has me hooked to see where it’s going and the backup was an interesting look at the impression Batman made on some young boys and a girl who we know will all grow to be great heroes.
Here’s the problem I had: this story deserves its own series. I’m not going to complain about the way DC handled the relaunch (at least not as much as I want to), but I really think DC dropped the ball in the handling of Detective Comics. I’m not talking about Tony Daniel being the writer, but rather how it was used as just another batman title. We have plenty of Batman titles and Detective deserved to be a little bit more. I wish DC had mirrored what it was doing with Action Comics and used ‘tec to tell the New 52 origin of Batman. Obviously Snyder has a story to tell and from the looks of this issue, it’s going to be a damn good one. And a backup featuring the origins of the Robins would have made a beautiful counterbalance.
Anyway… This zero issue was quite possibly my favorite single issue DC has put out in the last year. This book was never in any danger of being dropped from my pull list, but this issue ensures Snyder and Capullo get another year from me at least.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
