All good things must come to an end and this is proof of that. Bryan Q Miller is wrapping up is run turning Stephanie Brown from irritating wanna-be super hero into a strong beloved heroine. One thing I have always loved about comics is that even though it tends to be a boy's club there are many character for girls and women to look up to and Steph as Batgirl is the perfect example of this.
Mr. Miller ended his run on the series by playing to what his strength had been all along, by making the reader get emotionally invested in the character. We are treated to the event of Batgirl confronting her father once again who exposes her to the infamous Black Mercy, which she successfully defeats through sheer force of will. This fits into the theme of the series of Brown going from the girl everybody was used to and becoming the woman she was meant to be by proving she could handle any situation she came across. Throughout the issue she discovers that her mother has known about her secret identity all along, and is quite proud of her daughter. Brown also learns through a very subtle moment with Robin and several kids that even during her all to short tenure she really made a difference in Gotham. The story wraps up the way it was meant to with the first and latest Batgirls, two generations of one of DC's most popular characters, on a rooftop talking as the sun comes up. At this time, we as readers are given a glimpse of what Brown saw under the influence of the Black Mercy, we see great adventures that could have been and may still happen if only in our imaginations. We are left with the image of Batgirl looking at the purple sky, with tears in her eyes, telling both Barbara as well as the fans that "it's only the end if you want it to be".
I have already talked about Bryan Q Miller's writing, but I would be remiss if I did not discuss, Pere Perez's dynamic artwork; it's clean cut with a very character focused style that really sells the story to the reader. We all know next month the story of our beloved Stephanie Brown is over, but we will always have this time in which a beloved character shined and reached her full potential. Gail Simone is a very talented writer and I know many are happy to see the return of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, but Steph's time as Batgirl was special and we as fans will never forget it.
