In many ways this is a review for the entire series rather than this single issue. We've seen Stephanie grow as a character over the past two years and this has become a book that I look forward to and never miss (that's really saying something since I was out of comics when she was first introduced and when she died, so I had little background with the character before Phil Noto's covers made me pick up the series).
Bryan Q. Miller consistently knocked it out of the park over the past 24 issues and this was a fitting coda for the series and the character. The story beats are emotional and hit all the right notes, but do not seem forced. We get to see her make peace with her mother, we see her heart's desires through Black Mercy-induced visions (maybe we even get an idea of the stories we're missing because the series is ending), we see her realize the good she's done in Gotham and lives she's touched. We even see that Damian must have some emotional attachment to her, as he watches over the hospital while she is unconcious (although he might just be a creepy little kid and wasn't guarding her at all). The ending, with her and Oracle on a rooftop was a wonderful distillation of their relationship and the progress she has made as a character.
The book was called Batgirl, but it was almost as much about Oracle. I read very few issues with Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, but I've always had a hard time seeing anyone else in the role, now I feel like Stephanie Brown IS Batgirl. When she was dying, she famously asked Batman if she was ever really Robin. She did the impossible and made me feel like someone other than Barbara was really Batgirl.
The art seemed a little bit rushed at times, but overall was good. I should add that every artist associated with this title, from Pere Perez to Dustin Nguyen to Lee Garbett to Phil Noto has done an excellent job.
If you are looking for a book that will be a good read for anyone, young or old, male or female, DC zombie or comic newbie, these 24 issues have something anyone would like. I was sad initially to find out that Stephanie's future in the re-boot was up in the air, but she got a two year series that is better than most heroes get and I'll go back and read these issues plenty of times.
