I had so much hope for this title. I don't subscribe to the fact that this will be turn into 'death-fest', thats too easy. This could very much more be a modern superhero retelling of Lord of The Flies. But what we had in the first issue, content wise, was very disappointing. 16 Heroes have entered the Arena, but the focus here is entirely on Hazmat. New readers have to cope with a 'name check' with the majority of the cast members and have no reason to really care about anyone about the rest of the cast. Arcade, the villain of the piece, is really a shoe in. His character here really bears no resemblance to his previous appearances that I have read. Somehow his powers are almost have risen to godlike level and I have to question if a different or new villain should have been bought in rather than Arcade changed so much. Kev Walker's art is definitely the high point of the book. Given that new readers can only guess the powers and proficiencies of numerous characters, he does an exemplary job of distinguishing characters. This could be something good, but issue 1 was too much of an 'Establishing shot'. Maybe its time for Marvel to revisit double size first issues to really flesh out the idea. With two issues for December putting both together may have better encouraged people trying the title.
