3D-Man was the best part of Secret Invasion. There, I said it.

After reading the surprisingly awesome secret invasion arc in Slott and Caselli’s Avengers: the Initiative, I became a fan of one Delroy Garrett. Once I saw one of my favorite D-List characters was going to be involved with my favorite C-List squad, I knew I was in for a treat. Jeff Parker writes Delroy as a character you’re just a couple steps away from pitying. He dating a beautiful girl, he’s got superpowers, and people want to make him a star, but he is full of regrets and the only time he seems happy is when he hears that the guys who entrusted him with the decidedly goofy 3D-Man mantle are getting their time in the spotlight. The narration boxes are used to great effect in making us understand the
character and when the context of how they are being used is revealed
it makes you like him even more. While the Atlas team takes a backseat this issue, the last page (and to a lesser extent the back-up story) show’s we’ve got a sizable serving of bad-assery heading our way.

The art in the first feature has harkens back to the Maleev Daredevil run in that it’s nothing your friends want on a poster but the mood and story telling is pitch perfect. The back up has a cleaner line which fits its silly premise but I must admit I chuckled at the slow reveal of each characters changing hairstyle.

Long story short: Buy Atlas. There is a reason that they keep un-cancelling this book. If you really love comics you’ll really love these characters.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

Comments

  1. I didn’t read the Avengers Initiative Secret Invasion arc when it came out.  How big a player in it is 3-D man?

  2. Major Props on this review!  The more Atlas love, the better!  There is literally NOTHING that I do not LOVE about this book!!!

    jeff.

  3. He plays a pivotal role in the story.

In fact, Avengers Initiative is pivotal to the whole Secret Invasion story. Much more than any of the other books including Bendis’s Avengers titles.
