Dear Aquaman, Dear Aquaman/
Please give your advice to me, Aquaman!

Changing the tone of this series ever so slightly has been a godsend for this series. Geoff Johns has made this an ‘action first’ kind of comic but he still was writing in the style of Green Lantern if I’m honest. It was slow and somewhat deliberate in giving us as much information as possible in the new 52 version of Aquaman. The art has always been pretty to look at but for a time I really didn’t know if I could continue with this series. Thankfully, Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis delivers us what could be the best issue of the run so far.

I am in love with Ivan Reis’s art. There are so many fantastic panels/pages in this issue I really don’t see a clunker in the bunch. When we see ‘The Prisoner’s’ use his powers for the first time, I literally dropped my jaw for a second. What a fantastic showcase of such an interesting power. I have no idea how Ivan Reis, Joe Pardo, AND Rod Reis do this ever issue. Well Reis and Pardo have two more inkers help them (Oclair Albert and Andy Lanning) out here but I never noticed the change if it really happened that much. You’re in awe of the pages you see in this issue. I have no idea why the Eisner’s committee just not go to Reis house and give him the Eisner for ‘Greatest Artist Alive’ and make that the end of it.

The story though is a lot of fun and shouldn’t be left out when buying this issue. Johns has pretty much given up on a complex story here and just go full out on the action. Even more so with this issue if that’s even possible. Again I LOVE the power for this Prisoner character and I hope we see more of him after this arc (i.e. “Please don’t kill him off Johns!”) We get that great fight in the opening pages and then turn to see Aquaman and Ya’wara fight people in the jungles for barely a reason. It’s just a reason to give Reis and his team a chance to draw tigers and leopards kill people! But when Johns have to put some story in this issue I do admit he does a good job, for once, with this Chen guy. I don’t know if Johns is changing the origin that much for Black Manta but I’ll be surprised to see where he keeps going with his origin next month.

This series has quickly risen up in quality thanks to the slight change in tone by Geoff Johns. Just go for the action and let’s put the story to the side. Also, I think he’ll just give Reis a script (like the size of Mark Millar’s for Nemesis) and let him and his team go bananas. It’s amazing that a character such as Aquaman get a fantastic set of creators to make such amazing comics for him. Yes I’m talking about Aquaman like he actually exists…That’s how pumped I am for this series now! I hope this team never leaves if they keep this pace up.
