Please give your advice to me, Aquaman!

If there is one way we can pitch a legitimate Aquaman film to the public would be for WB to get their hands on this series. Ever since the relaunch started there was one book above all others I was looking forward to the most, and it is this title. Yeah you got Snyder on Batman and OMAC has been pretty sweet but think about it for a second. It’s 2011 (going into 2012) and I’m reading a fucking Aquaman comic. Not for shits and giggles, and not because of Tom Katers, but because I was stoked for an Aquaman revival. So far Geoff Johns is doing what he does best in that he has some pretty action packed ideas and an epic storyline in the making. But let me go back to my original statement.

You see, what makes me think an Aquaman film would work is by what Johns and Ivan Reis are doing. In this particular issue, which is a finale to ‘The Trench’ opening, there is not one but TWO double page spreads in this. Yeah it looks fucking gorgeous and I’ll get to it in a minute but more important this was a design issue from writer to artist. I can tell this is what Johns would have in mind when a huge cut to an important plot element would occur in a movie. Of course we’d see a master shot of the Queen and King of the Trench or a huge Atalantis ship stuck in the bottom of the ocean. It’s like Johns is tell Reis to draw these moments not only to give orgasms to my eyeballs but also do storyboards for an actual film.

I don’t mean to offend any other artists working at DC because a lot of them are doing fantastic work for their respective titles. But I have no qualms in saying that all other artists would do poorly in comparison to Ivan Reis for this title. Reis is like a grizzly old veteran who knows what to do and how to do it. So doing these pages is pretty much par for the course for him. Yeah he’s got to draw like a million sea monsters in a single page; but this is the same guy who did all of the work in Blackest Night and didn’t bat an eyelash when a million corpses had to go into a single double page spread. You can tell that even for a monthly timeframe, Reis is putting a ton of effort into each drawing that I suspect he must have four arms to do all of this workload. Again it’s just hard to imagine anyone else coming in doing these pages and it’ll only be the more disappointing if/when Reis has to be replaced cause he can’t keep the pace up. Unless of course he’s inhuman which is what I suspect all along since Reis joined DC.

So yeah, maybe this book is nothing but dumb fun so far and it would make Michael Bay blush. But who cares!? It’s exactly what this book wants to be thanks to Geoff Johns scripts which deliver a perfect balance of story and kick ass moments. Plus it doesn’t hurt that Ivan Reis continues to show the big boys just how to get it done. I seriously hope someone at Warner Bros is reading this comic and realizes that an Aquaman film can be a reality. If this first arc proved anything its that there is more to Aquaman then the Super Friends.
