Awful cover aside (thank you once again Batt), I am excited for this issue solely based on the final page last issue. A city full of deadly traps? AND it’s runned by Vandal Savage? How can I lose!?

Well Paul Cornell certainly entices me with that prospect. But that’s not where he goes at all with this issue. Instead it is a bit of a history lesson with the relationship between Savage and Luthor and how it all ties into the recent storyline. While I am a bit bummed we didn’t get to see the deadly traps, we do get a hilarious montage on Vandal Savage. The fact that he has had this ongoing desire to get Luthor into his city was a lot of fun to read. Whether it be from original material or Cornell tying into (somewhat hamfisted) into DCU continutiy made it funny to me. This issue does fall into being more of a Vandal Savage story then anything Luthor related. Hell he made sure Luthor got the job done pretty quickly here so we can go back to Savage. While Cornell does handle a little bit into Luthor’s take on Death from last month; I would’ve like to see more of him in this issue. The way this issue ends too is a bit worrysome. Not because that it won’t be a cool crossover or anything, but I don’t know if I want to see a crossover in general.

I have to talk about the art though in this issue. Oy! Pete Woods was doing a pretty decent job with the title for the longest time. But his old ways have finally caught up with him and let me tell you: This is one fugly issue. Faces change throughout the issue, hell Luthor in one page changes his face 4 times within. Ridiculous and it only gets worse as the issue goes on. Where is Sean Chen when you need him?

I didn’t even get into the back up….which isn’t worth getting into because it bored me to death by the time it got halfway done. The issue overall is pretty fun but it isn’t as funny as I thought it would be. Add in some pretty poor art and a poor back up; this isn’t one of the best issues for Action Comics in a while. Let’s hope that with a crossover coming up it will bring back more of the fun.
