The pages of Action Comics #2 blurred through my hands on my first read. I couldn’t wait to see the next panel and I hit the end of the book like running full speed into a brick wall. I didn’t read the extra pages after the first read or the second. I wanted to experience the story again as quickly as possible.

It is fascinating to see how Superman develops in this new DCU. His attitude is youthful and cocky while still being heroic and fun. It is also amusing to see Luthor with no real idea how Superman works. He doesn’t know Superman’s abilities or origin or morality. Lex is afraid of Superman, not just of what he stands for, but he is afraid that Superman is going to hurt him personally.

Regarding the art: i think Morales has a good conceptual feel for this character and how to draw him in a dynamic fashion. In fact, he seems to have a more difficult time with stationary characters than with ones in motion. And while I have grown to love Brent Anderson’s work on Astro City where he helps to tell a great story, his fill in pages (all of the pages with Lois) were pretty weak. Superman in the elevator looks somewhat deformed. That said, I knew who everyone was and what was happening so it wasn’t that bad.

This book lived up to its title and I’m very hopeful for things to come!

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good
