I've heard a lot of people on the Internet talk about how Action Comics has not been any good since No. 1. And while the stellar first issue was probably the series highlight, I enjoyed the first storyline. In particular, that early interrogation scene in No. 2 was awesome. But honestly, I loved this issue for completely different reasons than I loved the first arc. I loved the first arc of Grant Morrison's Action because it distilled all the greatness of the character -- the iconic nature of the Man of Steel. I loved this arc because it opened up all these possibilities for the future direction of the story. I'm a big fan of Geoff Johns, but the Justice League's interactions over in that title have felt very awkward and cheesy at times. The interactions between the group here felt much more natural. I loved that expression on Batman's face when he said, "Oh, I forgot. You're a journalist. A snoop." It conveyed a mix of anger and curiosity. Batman bringing up the fact that they may have to contain Superman in the future is an obvious and previously well-tread plot point, but I love how Morrison is continuing to put the pedal to the metal on Striving-For-Social-Justice Superman. I was even hoping we might still be in early Superman period -- what with the shirt and jeans early on in the issue -- but I guess him appearing with the League later in the issue confirms otherwise. Obviously the "CLARK KENT is DEAD!" from the solicitation is in name only, but it's a really interesting avenue to go down. Clark is letting everybody believe he is really dead. In the excellent backup story by Sholly Fisch, we see that people continue to believe he is dead through a mourning period. I wonder what will happen next issue, what he will come up with to reintroduce Clark Kent to the world believably eventually. I'm not always a fan of Rags Morales, especially some of the art earlier in this title, but this issue was really good. I'm warming up to him. And Sholly Fisch's backups in Action Comics might be the best regular backup feature I've ever seen, even better than Johns and Frank's Shazam. It's consistently quality stuff. I would urge anyone who maybe became less enamored with this title over time to pick up this issue, as it's the beginning of a new story, and it's awesome.
