I’ve never gotten drunk on the Grant Morrison Kool Aid. Sure he’s written some great stories, but I’ve also tried to get through as many of his tales that are convoluted, and lack the ultimate pay off that so many of his fans use as their justification for their devotion. The last ten issues of Morrison’s ACTION COMCS contain the best and worst aspects of Morrison and his now familiar tropes. The characters are interesting as is the duality of what he writes- meta commentary and creative super heroics… But there’s also a grandiosity to this title that works against it. Like much of Morrison’s work,he has lofty deals that are never tangible enough in his narrative to justify his issues with pacing or episodic storytelling… If he’s going to write a monthly comic then he should write a monthly comic not just a trade broken up for monthly distribution. I’m tired of hearing “it’ll pay off in the end” because with Morrison it is a crap shoot if it actually will. ACTION COMICS started off with a great concept and although Morrison’s attempts to humanize Superman are noble and interesting the actual story being told is just not of the quality of the concept. All f that being said, this issue actually seems to break free of whatever editorial or self I,posed shackles that made the last few issues so disparate. This is a great issue that established Morrison’s take on the Superman mythos and cast. I very much enjoy the fact that Supernan is respected by the people and his peers in the Justice League not for being the best hero, but for having the highest altruistic deals… For once “the Big Blue Boy Scout” moniker makes sense and does not reduce Superman To the all too basic, straight and narrow boring archetype he has been for far too long. If Morrison can keep this pace this new storyline might be the ACTION COMICS we have been waiting for since the relaunch.
