Pick of the Week Podcast

Pick of the Week #173 – Savage Dragon #145

Show Notes

We’re in San Francisco for WonderCon, it’s late, Josh is punchy and we’ve got G.I. Joe on the brain. No show notes due to the fact that we’re at the convention all weekend, so accept our apologies and enjoy the madness.

Running Time – 00:59:25

(Thanks to miyamotofreak for the show notes!)

Pick of the Week:
00:02:10 – Ron wants you to jump on with Savage Dragon #145, his Pick of the Week. Don’t miss the derail!

Comics:
00:10:25 – The discussion of The New Avengers #50 confirms that Josh’s love for a certain Clint is in need of intervention.
00:17:27 – Green Lantern #38 is clearly building up to the Rainbow War (or Blackest Night if you want to be all manly about it).
00:20:40 – Battlefields: Dear Billy #2 did not show up at several LCSs (including mine) so all I can say is I think it’s Josh and Conor’s Pick of the Week (as I tried not to listen).
00:24:05 – Justice Society #24 has Josh asking “Why does Power Girl need headgear?”
00:27:03 – Ron is wrong about Gigantic #3 (it’s a 5 issue miniseries not an ongoing).
00:29:21 – Apparently, The Sword #15 is some Garth Ennis shit.
00:30:48 – The Umbrella Academy: Dallas #4 is not really talked about as much as mentioned for an awesome cover.
00:31:48 – Captain America #47 has the iFanboys wondering if Namor is the new Tony Stark.
00:34:11 – G.I.: Joe Origins #1 apparently came out last week but like Battlefields this week, had a staggered release.

User Reviews:
00:39:56 – JumpingJupiter says, “Mouse Guard is a shining example of why sequential story-telling is important” about Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 #5.
00:42:22 – ohcaroline is going to save $3 every month after reading Thunderbolts #129.
00:45:26 – SilverAgeTom has his entire Hulk #10 review read by Ron. Nice!

Comics (Again?):
00:48:31 – iFanboys add some filler with Fantastic Four #564.
00:50:28 – Ultimate Spider-Man #131 was close to the Pick of the Week for Conor, the Ultimatum fan.
00:51:10 – Nova #22 has Josh declaring “Cover of the Year.” My WonderCon Savage Dragon variant disagrees.
00:52:59 – A big quality drop-off with The Mighty Avengers #22.

iFanboy Members:
00:54:40 – Become an iFanboy member and play Russian Roulette with comic books or buy a bootleg Watchmen shirt. Hurm.

Music:
“Live and Let Die”
Guns N Roses

  1. oh jesus, green lantern #38? NOOO!

  2. you may think that people in their young 20’s wouldnt get the G.I. Joe jokes but i can tell you that im 23 and i remember those episodes and i was laughing so hard i could barely breathe. Also i love the off the cuff show format you need to a bit more often. Thanks for another great show.

  3. I’m suprized that they didn’t mention how terrible the art on the Ms. Marvel page

  4. @Gabe: dude, that art was horrific

  5. whats the problem with the myspace site?   also i didnt really care this thunderbolts issue but its going to tie in with deadpool so i MUST follow it. kinda silly to introduce a new team then  in the 3rd issue already start a crossover but o well.

  6. Hey josh and conor….guess who I think is gonna make a big return in this rainbow war for Green Lantern?

That’s right! The return of Dr. Spectro and Rainbow Rider!

(this post is sponsered by Skittles: Taste the Rainbow)

  7. Writing show notes now.

  8. (I know he anit gonna read this til tomorrow but still)

I like your idea for Hulk conor…..in theory. But theory is a confusing thing and anything that involves Jeph Loeb’s Hulk is usually wrong. Your reaction, whenever it happens, will be funny no matter what though.

  10. Also please feel free to edit the show notes into the original post.

  11. The Star Sapphire Corps are Violet.

  12. And the Kitty’s Name is Dex-Star.

  13. Some of the Transformer PSA’s were just as bad.

  14. Thank you for the notes miya!

  15. Mouse Guard seems to be keeping a quarterly shedule btw. And yes, what a cover! Doe is great!

  16. @conor any idea when we can expect the Red Hulk review? I honestly can’t wait. can we expect an article or do you plan on discussing it on the video show? PLEASE DO THIS SOON!! 😀

I don’t care a lick about continuity, i just think it’s poorly written comics (it sure looks pretty though)

  17. @peterporker that’s originally how deadpool started, as a part of the secret invasion crossover

  18. Miyamotofreak FTW!  Thanks for doing the show notes.  The iFanbase is awesome when it comes to this kind of stuff.

  19. I love the G.I. Joe books right now, but I have to disagree about the art of Origins #1.  I just hated it.

And if anyone is waiting for the red Hulk reveal…keep waiting.  At Wonder Con they stated that you wouldn’t find out until the end of Jeph’s run, in the #20s.  So if you really really care who it is, you’re in for a wait.

So I got my members shirt, right after I got home from Wonder Con.  Guess what comic I got?  An issue of Countdown…thanks guys.  (The shirt and pins rock though)

As of last night, every other word my wife says is "hurm"

  20. I kleep waiting for the G.I. Joe discussion to end and it keeps not ending. Hilarious!

  21. nice podcast

  22. Man, you guys do a fun show when you’re sleepy.  I love how Josh made a point of calling Clint Barton "Clint Barton," then pointed out that he was doing this just so that there wouldn’t be any mistaking it.

Thanks for highlighting my "Thunderbolts" review. Josh had a good point that having previous knowledge of the new characters isn’t necessary for enjoying a book, and that if we were reading a book with original characters, we wouldn’t know them from the start.  I did try to keep that in mind; I knew there was going to be a fullscale cast turnover and I made a point to keep reading despite that.  But I do think there’s a different standard when you’re completely changing the cast of an ongoing title.  I didn’t want to keep reading just because I’d always been reading it but I wanted to make sure the new story and premise appealed to me.  And honestly, I thought this issue was bad.  It’s not that Andy Diggle’s a bad writer, but the story in this issue didn’t interest me, and it doesn’t give me a reason to want to stick with a series that is completely different from the one I started buying.  If I want to find out more about Diggle’s work, I’ll invest in something he created in the past that I haven’t gotten around to yet.

  23. thanks miyamotofreak for the show notes!

  24. Actually having prior knowledge of the Ghost is more than likely just going to piss you off.  I have no idea why they’re making him look like one of the Crystal Skull aliens but he used to be one of the better Iron Man villains.

  25. @Tork  I really do try not to be an "OMG THEY ARE WRITING THEM WRONG" kind of fan, at least not if I can see a good storytelling reason for what’s happening.  I just didn’t feel like any of these characters had much in the way of personality.

Also, I apparently keep getting Ghost mixed up with Box, who is an Alpha Flight character being used in Uncanny X-Men.  A little learning is a dangerous thing.

  26. <_> when I saw Josh’s favorite "Nova Corps" cover (specifically: Nova #22 variant cover). I thought to myself "now that’s a snazzy cover, now let’s see if Ron’s (the Savage Dragon Cover) holds merit.

    ….

WOW!!!! RON WINS. SORRY Josh -_-…"

Anyways that’s the discussion that just ended in me’ head. Clearly my bias with Obama is involved. Because I was interested in the fellow since December 2006… Clearly it’s a clever way to sell a comic "attach obama on any cover/storyline" =| Hope it’s not a trend. [considering they did it in Spider-man (as a guest appearance) and Air Gear (manga) ]

I promise to be more neutral with the next cover with him in it.

  27. Thanks be to Ron.  Had to go out and get Savage Dragon after it became POTW and I’m glad I did.  I will probably continue to get it and want to know all about him now having never read it before.  I liked Larsen from his old ASM stuff, but this is great!!

Thanks again Ron and great show all!

  28. If Greg Capullo did the pencils for spawn again I would buy it.

  29. @ohcaroline– I guess.  The way Marvel’s been handling the character just sticks in my craw especially when the big consensus seems to be "Iron Man has no good villains beyond Mandarin and the three armor guys".

  30. i was writing the show notes 1st  then my computer crashed  8-(

  31. RED!

    YELLOW!

    GREEN!

    PAPER!

    SCISSORS!

    YAWN . . .

  32. Am I the only one who thinks Green Lantern is venturing off into Sillyville?

I’m going to go look for GI Joe PSAs right this very minute.  Fond memories!

  33. You know, you might just be.

  34. Right with you, Horatio, as my previous post may have hinted. There are two GL books, I want the Corps to be the mob book and GL to feature Hal being allowed to fight villains who don’t actually get their powers from a Pantone chart.

I want GL, not the neverending (colouring-in) story.

  35. @Ultimatehoratio-I didn’t enjoy this past issue of GL.  It was good, but not the level that the rest of the arc was.  And with the teal lantern thing…well, I am a wee bit apprehensive that it might take a right on Kooky street straight into Sillyville.  Just a wee bit.  But hey; its a Johns, Reis and Van Sciever collaboration.  I’m still very optomistic.

  36. I’ve loved this book for a long time, but Saint Walker is really not doing it for me.  I half expect to see him distibuting pamphlets and playing tambourine on Oa in the next issue.  Green Lantern was always about wonky science, but when you add wonky philosophy and more colors I start to get loopy.  I still mostly like the book except when Saint Walker is speaking.

  37. @ultimatehoratio  I don’t know about Sillyville, but I think they were on about the third color lantern when I realized I didn’t care.

  38. =| I listened to 6 podcasts in a row today @_@…

  39. Just to clarify they were all ifanboy audios XD.

  40. I’ve never read a GI Joe comic, they’re about dolls, yes? I liked Micronauts, that was about dolls. And can I resist a book with a villain named Copacabana?

  41. @Mart

In a fit of nostagia during the recent ice storm here, I reread Micronauts #s 1-12.  The dialogue is very much of its time, but that Michael Golden art is still beautiful.

If you’re reading Guardians of the Galaxy, Bug from the Micronauts is currently a member of the team.  WTF is Commander Rann?

  42. Cheers, I’m buying it but am way behind. So many comics!

  43. I’ve been listening to you guys for over a year now, and really like the show.

When I heard you dudes discuss G.I. Joe last week, I realized it was my duty to let you know about the Joe-related podcast that me & my pals do (each episode is up reading a file card from the 80s). I’d planned to bring it up in person at the Isotope party, but ended up spending most of my time there out front, escaping the crowd. Anyway, here’s the newest episode:

  44. The prophecized war has actually already been referred to as "The War of Light" , I think.

  45. Oh and just to let you know, a radio station uses this quote all the time…..and I love it to death. So excuse me for putting this in caps but:

    PORK CHOP SANDWICHES!!!
