X-MEN: REGENESIS #1

When the dust settles from the X-Men’s Schism, a line has been drawn, and every mutant must choose.

Who will they follow — Cyclops or Wolverine?

Either way, with mutantkind cut in two, things will never be the same.

Setting the stage for this month’s WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN #1 and November’s all-new UNCANNY X-MEN #1, Kieron Gillen (UNCANNY X-MEN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY) and Billy Tan (UNCANNY X-FORCE, NEW AVENGERS) take us through the ranks of the X-Men as they choose their destiny.

  1. I can’t decide whether this will be just filler to bulk up this transition, or legitimately important.

  2. I’ll get it just to inform the listeners/likers/friends/followers for my podcast and website at http://www.planetidle.com/TNTM .html

  3. Billy Tan? Yes!

  4. Tans art looks horrible… the lettering puts me off immediatly, sorry Kieron – won’t be picking this up…

  5. Do you need to have read X-men Schism to read this issue?

    • Yes lol

    • Unlikely. Cyclops and Wolverine have split up and this issue will decide who gets the kids, pets, and good china.

    • Schism is worthless in the same way that Captain America Reborn, One More Day, or even Flashpoint are worthless. Just kind of a convenient plot device to launch a new status quo. Worthless is the wrong word but you know what I mean

    • Okay, I understand people are still touchy about OMD, but Reborn and Flashpoint? Really? As far as events go I thought those two did pretty good. I guess some people are just Negative Nancy’s.

    • The point isn’t that it’s a bad event, it’s that you don’t need to read it to get what’s going on in this. Flashpoint caused the current DCU, but otherwise, there is no connection at all. When telling someone to read the new DCU, I would never say “read Flashpoint first.”

    • @ jonny – I wasn’t necessarily saying those events were bad, just that they were unnecessary to a reader looking to jump on, and that they were supremely convoluted and logically-convenient plot devices (yes I understand that I am describing 99% of mainstream superhero comics). For the record, I thought all of those events were awful but that doesn’t make me negative, it just means I didn’t like them. I’m not touchy about OMD, I just don’t care about it.

I’m skipping this comic for the same reason that I skipped Schism #5. I’m very excited for the new status quo because I think the Utopia-era x-books have been pretty horrific for the most part, but I don’t care about knowing all of the continuity on how they got there.

    • @jonny As a Nancy who is not negative, I resent your comment.

  6. I’m just throwing this out there right now, but If the team of Domino, Jubes, Warpath and Storm Aren’t a covert spy team for TeamWolvie I may have to drop all the x-books.

  7. Looks intresting. i have no problem with Tan’s art, and I do like me some Gillen. Worth a look see.

  8. I’ll try it sounds like this could be very intresting since Wolverine and Cyclops have been headed down this road since almost the day Wolvie showed up! May the best team win!!
    Just sayin’,

    K

  9. I loved Schism and looking forward to this one. I love this idea and looking forward to how they eventually get back together.

  10. What’s the deal with the tribal fisticuffs? lol that was a bit over the top, but this is good filler before Wolvie & the X-Men. Also looking forward to Havok joining X-Factor.

  11. i haven’t read x-men in a long time, i thought this was really great. they should have a totally character based special like this every 2 months

  12. A decently written epilogue for Schism. I like the new direction! But I HATE HATE HATE the way Tan draws Cyclops. The visor is all wrong.

  13. Gillen did a great job laying out the motivations for these characters. Why Psylocke is on two teams, and why Storm stayed with Cyclops makes sense now. The reason that Wolverine went to Iceman was something I would never have thought of on my own, but in hindsight makes total sense. I also really liked the bit with Hope and why she acts the way she does. Very well done all around, but I do agree that the tribal metaphor was kind of weird.

  14. I agree that tribal stuff was strange….it especially made it tricky to tell who was on which side on that last page.

Tan’s art wasn’t awful, but pretty inconsistent. I gotta give him credit on the scene with the kids though….they looked like teenagers!

I think this book did its job — answered some questions, raised some others, and got me excited for the new status quo.

    Solid 4/5

  15. I’d trade Gambit for Colossus, but besides that I love everyone on Logan’s team. Everyone on Scott’s team annoys me.

  16. This was the kicker for me, I think I’m done with the x-books for a while ( and they are my favorite characters). I just hate this direction, none of these characters ring true under Aaron or Gillan. Regenesis was the straw that broke this camel’s back (did I actually just refer to myself as a camel?!?)

  17. Badddddd arttttttttt.
