After being knocked out by X-Men: Schism, I found this book to be an unfortunate mis-step in the X-franchise relaunch, seriously knocking my enthusiasm for the whole affair.
The format of the issue, which sees Cyclops and Wolverine recruiting members for their respective X-teams, quickly became repetitive and dull, and the uninspired artwork did nothing to improve matters. Perhaps a more dynamic approach to the art (by, say, an Alan Davis?) might have helped to liven things up in what was always going to be a very talky book. As it is, this felt like the kind of attempt to squeeze some extra bucks out of the die-hard fans that always scared me away from the X-Men books in the first place. I’m still excited by the preview art I’ve seen and the creative teams Marvel have recruited for the new books, but really, I regret taking a chance on this one. Not something I would normally say about a Kieran Gillen title.
