  1. I skipped the Ultimate X series, but I am definitely intrigued by Nick Spencer on this. That guy can write.

  2. I hate spending $3.99 on any Marvel comics, but my gut tells me Spencer + Medina = Gold.

  3. Maaaan, the $3.99 hate is GROWING. I understand completely why people care, I’ve just never given it much thought. It makes me feel like I should care too… but I don’t.

It seems like a year ago people didn’t care as much about the $3.99 stuff, but nowadays I can’t read the comments section of any $3.99 Marvel comic without the lamenting of broken wallets. I always wonder how much of the vocal internet minority actually translates down to the sales figures. Is Marvel going to see an even bigger downturn in readership now that we’re a ways into this $3.99 mess? And didn’t they start this shit with added content? Whatever happened to that?

Anyway… Let’s do it again Mr. Spencer!

    • A $3.99 comic costs £3.15 at my comic shop. Translate that back to US dollars at todays rates it’s $4.95 for a 20 – 22 story page comics. When you’ve got a mortgage, bills and children, every Penny / Cent counts.

    • I dropped all the Marvel Comics that were 3.99, and eventually I dropped all Marvel U books altogether. I know some people could care less, and will gladly fork over 4 bucks for a Bendis book, but I didn’t like Marvel’s random price-jacking and they slowly but surely completely lost me as a consumer. The only books I get from Marvel are the Millar books which are 2.99.

I didn’t like it when DC went to 3.99 on a few books and skipped those as well. I’m glad they changed their mind. If Marvel went back to 2.99 for all their books, I dunno, they’re already lost me, it would take a lot to get me back.

  4. Remember guys, 2 extra pages in this!

    ….2!

    • I’m all sorts of oblivious. Not only was I just talking about not paying attention to price, but I don’t pay attention to the page counts either. I’m such an inadequate comic book fan. Everybody cares about all this shit I don’t care about. What’s wrong with me?

Also: What’s up with that last period before the last 2 being bigger? An accidental bolding? An obese period? It confuses me.

    • It looks like it’s a bug. I guess it can only read three ‘.’ before thinking it’s the end of a sentence.

      …Joke ruined. lol

    • We all worked very hard to give you as much for your money as we could. Obviously I don’t determine these things, but I did all I was able to. Really hope you guys enjoy the book, I think we’re building something special here.

    • Really looking forward to a book of 22 pages of JUST story…it’s rare when it happens, but it’s fun to read a comic with no ad interruptions on every page.

  5. Not positive on whether or not I am picking this one up. I’ve never read any X-Men comics. Is this a good starting point or not even close?

  6. It is supposed to be a good starting point. I think there is Ultimate Universe back story, but I suspect you can just roll with it. I would just give it a shot, unless your budget is tight. In which case wait a day and check out some reviews of it.

  7. Completely skipped ultimate x-men first time around and i was glad for it. This time with Spencer writing and Medina on pencils i’m in till it’s no good which hopefully is a long, long time from now.

  8. Early reviews have definitely convinced me to download this book tomorrow night. Shocking how I’ve gone to about 60% digital in just a few short months.
Excited for a really dense read. X-Men stories are usually best when they dip heavily into heady sci-fi explorations of social issues. It sounds like Spencer’s take is gonna be my kind of x-men story for sure, and go into different routes than the 616 marvel universe will allow.

  9. The ultimate universe is actually going in some even bolder and more 21st-century-relevant directions than most of the New52 so far—in my humble opinion.

  10. I read all the Ult X-Men books including the pointless Ultimate X “mini” (which I’m sure was meant to be an ongoing but Loeb was too busy doing other stuff) and was into it in terms of entertainment. Wasn’t mindblowing but definitely had some good moments. I’m a huge Spencer fan too, so I feel like he is definitely the man that can jack up the intensity that bit more.

  11. HOLY CRAP! This was fantastic, way better than I thought it would be. Art was really good as well! Well played Mr. Spencer.

  12. This was a lot better than I expected; I think the preview pages actually hurt it.

  13. Great start. Spencer has a good handle on these characters. I’m loving the whole direction the ultimate universe is taking with this, the Ultimates and Spider man.

  14. Never read a X book before this and it was a lot of fun. I will be adding this to my list.

  15. i loved this! Over the past month I’ve really become a big Nick Spencer fan. This was my POW easily (although Batman gave it run for its money)

  16. The Jean Grey scene at the start really shocked me.

  17. This was so good. The opening with Karen/Jean was amazing, totally gets the title off to a shocking start and hopefully is just a taster of what’s to come.

Spencer covered a lot of ground in the issue, bringing a few strands in whilst not neglecting any of the characters. He really is something special. Definitely my pick of the week, this book.

  18. I disagree with you guys..i thought it was an ok overall “3”. Disappointed that the cover was a bait and switch. I don’t think there is enough here to justify coming back for me with prices and all the really good books out right now. I was expecting something else i suppose.

I really wished there would have been a nice one shot with the whole team or something, not the first part of a trade collection.

    • if your viewing it as the first part of trade, why not just wait? It doesn’t sound like your into monthly, single issue serialized comics but stories in one digestible whole.

  19. Meh.
