  1. I know everyone’s gonna have a hard-on for Saga, but come on this is way better!

    HICKMANNNNNNNNN!!!!!!

    • Totally agreed. Saga’s good too, but this is easily my favorite new book coming out.

    • They scratch such different itches, I like them both. But these covers. Anyone else think they should release some Manhattan Projects prints in movie poster size? That’d be killer.

    • This is my second favorite new series this year. Saucer Country, this, then Saga. Although Conan is really starting to challenge for third place!

    • @KenOchalek: Oh man, I would be all about the poster sized prints. someone needs to get Hickman on the phone or something and make that happen haha.

    • and Scalped! It’s all good though, we don’t have to pick one favorite.

  2. So far this is the best series of 2012 with only two issues. I have never had so much with a comic until this series came along.

  3. Does this series kind of remind anyone else of Planetary? The first bunch of issues seem like largely stand alone stories but as the series continues you realize you are reading a sci fi book about everything. Has that feel to me.

    • I’ve only read the first trade of planetary so far but I see what your saying. Hickman has stated that he is trying to do for the most part one and done issues for this series which is great since in the past he’s mostly stuck to long form storytelling.

    • Which also seems to be the case with Fantastic Four & FF at the moment!

Planetary is one of my all time favourite series, in my opinion the best thing Ellis & Cassaday have ever done (although Cassaday Astonishing X-Men was good, best Beast I’ve ever seen) definitely get the lot you will not be disappointed!

    • Just wanted to agree with RileyArmpit32. EVERYONE on this website should read Planetary, and the Whedon/Cassaday run on Astonishing X-Men was also pretty damn good.

  4. So weird, I dont like Hickmans Marvel work at all but This and Secret have been mind blowing. Go figure.

  5. This feels like the most purely “hickman” book that Hickman is writing, and will sustain me when JH’s fantastic four run ends (likely won’t follow him to another Marvel book).

  6. This book really gets my brain going, so many ideas come to me while reading it, I sometimes have to take a breath, relax, and just enjoy it. After being luke warm about Red Wing, I’m happy as hell that I decided to pick this up.

  7. My shop doesn’t order this, so I can’t get any — and I don’t want to order it without having sampled it, but the covers are very intriguing. I’ll probably trade-wait at this point.

    • Wait…you want to buy a comic book from your shop, but they WON’T order it so they can sell it to you?

I’d get off that Titanic as soon as possible.

    • I think he’s saying his store does not get any copies for the shelves, And he’d rather not pull it blind (though i could be wrong).

I say if you like hickman, you should order this how ever you can. It’s A great book if you dig science weirdness.

  8. Big fan of Hickman, independent and otherwise.

I’ll be reading this and The Red Wing when MP finishes up.

    • I’m pretty sure Manhattan Projects is an ongoing series… “when MP finishes up” might be longer than you think.

    • I got so used to him doing four-to-six issue minis as science fiction novels that I overlooked the possibility.

But of course his long run on F4/FF speaks for his ability to do a fantastic job on such a book.

I guess I’ll see if the library has the trade of TRW.

      Thanks for the heads-up.

I was putting off the scifi/indy/creator-owned/recommended reading pile for the summer.

  9. With his ability to fuse history and fiction, Hickman has blown up to be one of the best writers out there. No other creator builds such explosive concepts that radiates across the comic landscape.

Can’t wait until this drops on Wednesday!

  10. This book is the best kind of wacky. It scratches my crazy itch, but manages to stay intelligent and intriguing. Hickman is the most innovative mind in comics since Grant Morrison first hit his stride. Bring on #4!

  11. I like what I think he’s implying in this story, which is that the freemasons have no power over what’s really going on. I’ve always thought this to be true. They love to allow people to conjure up spooky stories about what they do, and they’re intentionally secretive to keep people thinking they’re something, but they’re nothing. We’ll see in upcoming issues if that’s what he is implying or not

  12. This went from hot to cold for me. It just doesn’t hit any right notes for me personally, I was really excited for it but it just didn’t hold up. It is sort of fun and interesting but just not enough for me to keep going with it, this might have had more appeal if it was a mini instead.

  13. This started out as something different and very intriguing now; it seems very boring and really more out dated. The Einstein and the other famous physicist and scientist characters seemed like a cool concept and almost like they were out of time. Then mix in some of the odd ball charaters and it seemed like this had something going, that is no longer the case. This last issue was more like sitting around and chatting and the only thing that intrested me was the atomic skull guy and a little bit of his development. Sorry gave this a 2 and I am not sure that is even right, well I will stick around for next one to see where we are headed with this. If we are still sitting around and chatting I think I will be leaving the water cooler.

    K

    • I don’t really want to be that guy, but what in the hell are you talking about? I mean, it’s okay if this book isn’t your thing, or if you had a misperception about what this story was, and you don’t dig on what it actually is. That’s all cool. But it’s ridiculous to imply that nothing happened in this issue. For God’s sake, ________ _ _________ had his _____ implanted into a super computer, and they ______ the ____ on _________. That’s some stuff. Big stuff. How can you legitimately expect MORE stuff to happen in a 26 page comic book?

    • This is a comic that has a very narrow and specific audience, I gave it a fair shot and I am just not it. Just because a book is popular or heavily hyped doesn’t mean it instantly is a perfect fit for everyone. I dropped it as of this issue and there are other books out there that are a better fit, it isn’t worth worrying about, that’s life. It doesn’t mean it is a bad comic or I or anyone else is missing something.

    • @ Zhurrie

I agree with what your saying that popularity shouldn’t make buy or assume to get a book regardless, I for one am dropping Saga which just isn’t my thing whatsoever & I’ve always struggled massively with BKV books, but being a huge Hickman fan for me I truly love this & pretty much anything he has done.

So I guess the morale of the situation is just buy what you like, & don’t listen to anyone else but your own gut instinct on what you think is right for you!

    • @JonSamuelson: Thank you.

    • *sigh* I knew I should have kept my mouth shut. I think my statements “it’s okay if this book isn’t your thing” and “you don’t dig on what it actually is. That’s all cool.” should be sufficient to explain that it’s entirely acceptable if you don’t like this book. The fact that it’s “popular” or “heavily hyped” have no bearing on whether or not you liked it. You didn’t, that’s fine. My point was that to argue that this title/issue was “boring” and “outdated” are entirely subjective criticisms, and without backing them up, have no weight. And to imply that nothing happened in this issue, that it was characters “sitting around chatting” is entirely false. It’s almost like arguing you didn’t like the Transformers movies based on the complaint that there wasn’t enough action. It’s cool if you didn’t like them, but that argument is entirely spurious.

    • Heh, I like how you seem to act exasperated that someone dare respond to your initial comment… which was pretty ridiculous in itself. I didn’t see any thesis or backed up and footnoted arguments from you either. It was one person saying he wasn’t feeling it and that it was boring, then you responded that he was crazy for thinking that, I simply was responding to the OP stating that this book does nothing for me and falls entirely flat and I find it terribly boring too. It isn’t that things don’t happen, they do, there just isn’t much reason to care or connection surrounding them which makes them fall flat unless the book itself is your thing and that is why you care. That was what I was saying.

  14. Loved it POTW, in a crazy-good week
