I have not finished my pile but I have 3 books all vying for the pick of the week and this is one of them (and as of this writing is the favorite.) It is another issue with more real people and insanity. How far can Hickman take us down the fictional path without jumping the shark? I don't know but I love it. In many ways this book has the same spirit as SHIELD in that it takes people you've heard of in history and makes a crazy nonfiction story but this is less dense, easier to read, and more fun than SHIELD was (and I loved that book.) This issue introduces to more craziness. We get FDR dying and being turned into artificial intelligence. Truman being a nutty freemason (are freemasons really that crazy?), an irradiated scientist, and the Enola Gay bombing Hiroshima even though Truman says not to because General Groves believes they should go ahead because of his religious upbringing. I love that Hickman lets the art tell the story and I don't feel hammered over the head with words, something I have felt with some of his other work. This is well written, is fast paced and does not leave me wondering why it ended so quickly. I have to compare this to Saga because it is one of my other finalists for pick of the week and they are both form Image. When both end I am left craving the next issue but the endings for The Manhattan Projects leaves me feeling more satisfied than Saga. Pitarra's art continues to be great. It is quirky and unlike anything else out there today. I can't wait for the next issue.
