GENERATION HOPE #1

Spinning directly out of UNCANNY X-MEN comes the most important new X-Book in years…GENERATION HOPE!

When Hope Summers returned from the future she triggered the rebirth of the mutant gene. Five lights appeared on Cerebra and five mutants… powers came to life, but their activations have been chaotic and dangerous, nearly killing each of them. It was only the touch of Hope that saved their lives. With Rogue and the four new mutants who were gathered in UNCANNY X-MEN, Hope heads to Japan to join Cyclops, Wolverine and the fifth light. But will this new light be a hero or a villain? Only KIERONGILLEN (THOR) and SALVA ESPIN (SAVAGE SHE-HULK) know!

  1. I am interested in this series, but Superboy 1 is out this week as well. I’ll get both and make my choice, I can’t afford two new books, I like both writers, so I’ll probably catch one in trade.

  2. @Zeppo: I’m in the same boat in a way, but I’ve already decided on tradewaiting this. I just want the first issue for a taste. I’m afraid this will get pulled into the X-verse, and I really don’t want to get stuck buying a Second Coming style crossover because I just can’t afford it. I think Superboy has a better chance of being self contained. At least I hope so.

  3. Nice! I’ve been loving the direction the X-books have taken lately, especially the push towards spotlighting these youngsters. I love aspect about what is making up this book, so I’m very anxious to read this.

  4. I’ve liked the 5 lights story.  I’ll pick up this one to see what it’s about, but I don’t see myself staying on this long term.

  5. I was suckered by two tears of Cable.  I’ll probably take a skittish peek at this.

  6. I dropped Uncanny AGAIN after Second Coming thanks in no small part to Matt Fraction and his cluster fuck of writing Marvel books. Thankfully this looks like it could have some legs to it and Gillen has been writing his ass off on some interesting stuff recently, so this for sure will be a buy from me!

  7. Will be giving this a shot.

  8. another x-men book can’t wait

  9. I have not liked the 5 lights, although I like the idea of more young mutants. I just have found their introduction by Fraction to be fairly blah. I love Gillen’s stuff, so far, so I am more optimistic for this series.

  10. I might buy it, but I don’t see enough buzz around it

  11. bzzz bzzzz bzzz

  12. I looked at the preview pages, I like the art but I feel like the Fifth Light is slightly inspired by AKIRA…

  13. Did Tetsuo from Akira appear near the end of the issue??

Pretty enjoyable issue though not too amazing. Gillen layed it on pretty thick with the numerous text boxes, but I think that’s more of a first issue thing. This felt like a pilot episode to a series that sounds really cool: it’s good, but you have a feeling that it’s going to get much better after the introductions are done.

  14. I love the idea of young mutants, but this team does not interest me at all with the entire cast being blandly designed and put together. To each his own i guess i really liked the New X-men and i guess i’ll pass on this until these new characters actually get character definition

  15. that being said that coipiel cover is awesome and i’ll give it a try just to say i gave it a try

  16. I’m very glad this book continues Hope’s story outside of Uncanny.  I drop the book everytime Greg Land comes on, and would hate to have to read all of Hope’s story in summary before the next big event.

  17. I’m not sure how well this worked as a first issue but it was solid enough and I like the premise so I’ll be back for #2.  Haven’t read anything leading up to this.  I would’ve preferred they just tell us the characters names and abilities and get on with the story instead of all the first person narrations.  I’m happy to see new young mutants again.

Art is great with some fantastic expressions.

Marvel’s backup summaries over do it big time.  I tried to read through the one in Uncanny X-Force and just got confused and turned off.  I don’t really care about all the recent history at this point, just give me good, contained stories with a strong team dynamic.  Skipped this one and went to wikipredia to get a quick and basic idea of Hope’s powers.

  18. Eh.

  19. All I’m saying is that every time I see the masthead design, it looks like it says "Generation Hype"

  20. The characters are all pretty weak to be honest. The issue was okay but compared to say the original Generation X they have little appeal. Fire and Ice as a power? Like wha? One hand is hot and the other is cold? Who thought of these things? Hope’s power is still pretty unclear and what do the others do exactly?

  21. I skiped.

  22. Doesn’t the fifth looks like Tetsuo?

  23. That was an Akira homage or at the very least an homage to manga, which is full of dudes that look like that sprouting phallic tenatacles left and right. The five lights bore me, although I like the super fast guy who is also aging super fast. That must have been done before, but probably not so integrally to the character (i.e. from the beginnning). Less 1st person narration summaries, please.

  24. I was very pleasantly surprised by this!! Excellent writing and art.
