  1. I really loved the first arc, enjoyed the three one-shots, but now lets get this series going with what this & New Avengers have been setting us up for new universes & new characters/members/villains?!
Plus the previews look immense, Weavers art ready to rival Opeñas (hopefully), I’m expecting big things please don’t let me down Mr. Hickman!

  2. Having a great time on this one so far. Looking forward to the art and the story. Just not sure how they can have such inexperienced folks on the team. Captain Universe has me worried.

  3. I’m looking forward to Weaver’s interiors.

  4. I’ve decided to drop. I just wasn’t digging it enough to justify purchasing 7 issues in 3 months. I think I just prefer smaller scale stories regularly with the occasional HUGE plot undertaking. Weaver’s art looks stellar though!

  5. This reminds me: Where the hell is SHIELD!?

Anyways, this should look great and hopefully the 2nd official story arc starts off well.

  6. I feel like there should be more buzz in the fan community about the New Universe tease. Maybe it’s just me, but this feels like a pretty big deal. I was a big fan of the New Universe titles when they were launched, and the idea of finally seeing the New Universe acknowledged in the regular 616 universe has me a little giddy. 🙂

    • This is the first time I’ve heard of the New Universe. What were the other books and were they good?

    • New Universe was kind of like an early attempt by Marvel at doing the Ultimates thing- They created a new universe separate from the 616 universe that was designed to be more realistic and more similar to the real world than the regular Marvel universe. It had no super-heroes until a phenomenon called “The White Event”, after which meta-humans started appearing around the world. The titles where Nightmask, which was about traveling the dreamscape, Star-Brand, which was about a dude who was given an mark that imbued it’s wearer with super-human abilities (flight, super-strength, etc), Justice, which was kind of a super-human mix of Punisher and Judge Dredd, DP-7 (an iron-man analogue) and Kickers, Inc (a team book). Some of the books were pretty cool (my favorite was Star Brand), but they just got lost in the background. I guess the fact that they were so far removed from everything else Marvel prevented them from getting any traction.

    • Thanks! I haven’t heard of any of those but they sound cool. When were they released?

This seems like another cool example of Hickman, like Bendis before him, dusting off an old and under used part of the Marvel universe and making it an integral part if his story.

    • No problem. 🙂

The New Universe line was launched in the late 80’s. http://marvel.wikia.com/Earth-148611

It looks like the storylines in Avengers and New Avengers are converging, or at least both dealing with the same phenomenon. I love it when this stuff happens. 🙂

    • The New Universe was ackowledged to some degree in the 616 universe in the 90s. Many of the characters and the star brand in particular were featured in Quasar…which seven people (including myself) read. I am interested to see if that is acknowledged at all in this storyline.

    • I thought DP-7 was the mutant book?

    • @ xrcst- DP7 was a 32 issue ongoing spanning from 1986-1989, related to the new universe. Mark Gruenwald wrote it as he also wrote Quasar too.

    • yeah, Riley I know what it was, the wraith said Dp7 was an iron man analoge. I remembered it being more of a mutatnt book and spitfire being the iron man analog, or at least having a robot in it. But maybe I’m crossing dp7 and psi force being a mutant analoge.

  7. Got tired of reading, not enjoying, and being told that I wait on Hickman, Hickman doesn’t wait on me.

    • Hey, to each their own. I really like Hickman’s style and this book in particular but its certainly not for everybody.

Rcently, Hickman seems to be slowly becoming the same kind if love him or hate him figure as Bendis. But I guess that often comes with success.

    • Possibly, because so far I’m loving what Bendis is doing on both X-Men books.

    • Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m a big Bendis fan too. It just seems like the guy is often a lightning rod and I’ve noticed that Hickman is starting to elicit some of the same type of feelings.

    • I’d say a closer comparison in plotting would be Grant Morrison. Both write for the long haul and structure their plots in that way.

    • @davidtobin: I totally agree with that. I was talking more about the “love him or hate him” feelings Hickman seems to be eliciting recently. Those remind me of the same kind of flack Bendis often gets.

  8. Can’t wait for this!

  9. Really not sure I will actually pick this up. I enjoyed the recent one and done character issues more than the first arc but for a book that comes out so often I really need to love it to keep going. If anything keeps me in it will be Hickman’s run on Fantastic Four

  10. I know a lot of people are cold on Hickman’s Avengers but I have loved every issue. Except for #5 which was unfortunately sold out last week. May have to see if another comic shop in the area has it still. Just finished #6 today though. Good stuff.

  11. ‘Most dangerous hero’?!?!

Alright!!! They are bringing The Sentry back!!!!

  12. Looks: 10
    Personality: 3

  13. Loved this.

I really like what Hickman’s building here. I have no experience with the New Universe, but I don’t think we need to. I’m following it just fine so far.

This is the kind of big idea threat that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes should be facing.

    Keep ’em coming.

  14. Quality issue that really makes you feel there’s so much more to come on a grander scale & that we are just touching the tip of this colossal iceberg!

  15. i’m loving this series. It works really well with the Illuminati Avengers book and now with the introduction of this event, i’m stoked. I’m loving where Hickman is taking this book.

  16. I’m almost glad I have no familiarity with the New Universe stuff from back when… its fun slowly learning all this different stuff.

  17. For a guy like me, who’s never read anything out of the ‘New Universe’ brand, I was completely lost by all of this. I usually don’t mind Hickman being so esoteric but man it was difficult to follow this. Researching what Starbrand is now I have a better idea on what happened here. But for my experience reading this on my own I found myself to be bored out of my mind and had no idea how to follow this. Also, just because Captain Universe and Nightmask are difficult to understand doesn’t mean it’ll be funny the second time to mention it.

Dustin Weaver’s art was very beautiful though. Him and his colorist Justin Ponsor did a great job at least making this befuddling issue nice to look at.

    2.5/5

    • I don’t mean to disparage your reading ability, but I know nothing about the New Universe either (other than that it existed in the 80s and Warren Ellis made an aborted attempt to revive the concept several years ago) and I understood this issue just fine. In fact, I think Hickman did a great job giving us just enough to keep up without dumping a wikipedia article on us.

Here’s what I took away from the issue:

The White Event causes certain individuals to get super-powers in order to protect the universe from collapse. “Nightmask” is the name given to one of those individuals, “Starbrand” is another. There are others, apparently. Normally, the selected individuals are the “hero” types (the guys we saw on the college campus — the romantic, the protector of the innocent, the misunderstood genius, and the visionary thinker). But since this White Event is somehow abnormal, that power has gone to someone who isn’t as traditionally qualified to receive it.

It’s okay if the book just isn’t hitting with you, but I disagree completely that it’s too esoteric.

    • @Ken: Well I did research on Starbrand and (along with your explanation) the issue made a bit more sense. But I honestly did not put any of that together in my initial reading.

  18. I really need to check out Warren Ellis’ newunivesal run.
Funny that the David Tennant looking guy in the cafeteria had a TARDIS phone case.

    • At first, I thought that was supposed to be Matt Fraction, ha ha ha.

    • Plus he was wearing a ‘Science Rocks’ t-shirt which I take to be a shout out to The Nowhere Men from Image comics. I’m kind of surprised that Marvel editorial let that slip by.

  19. Was bringing in the New universe a surprise to everyone else like it was me? Well i guess they said white event last issue, and I didn’t pick up on the reference until I saw Starbrand this issue.

My only problem is beween the two Avengers books, at first glance it looks like they are both facing similar multi-universal events. I kind of only want to read one of those types of stories right now.

    • Hickman has said that Avengers and New Avengers will be interconnected (though unnecessary to read one to get the other) – so if you are seeing connections, its probably intentional. (I realize now, that you could have been referring to a different Avengers book, and if so – sorry for jumping to conclusions.)

    • to me it looks like the events of New Avengers happens before Avengers…i only say that because Hyperion’s world suffered the event thats happening in New avengers.

    • Avengers #1 takes place sometime after New Avengers #3 (see: Cap’s bad dream).

  20. This title seems to be getting solid reviews.

Guess I’ll get the two dozen issues that represent its first year.

    Time to re-up my subscription.
