What is it about mutant news and the pre-dawn hours?
As we reported, Jason Aaron's X-Men: Schism spells the end for Uncanny X-Men, which concludes this October with #544. But we also knew the event would also mean a newly polarized status quo for the mutant world. Now we know how it all shakes out in terms of what we might be buying.
According to the AP, the fallout from Schism will see two new titles "rising phoenix-like from the ashes of one." Actually, that's X-Men editor Nick Lowe playing with fire there. We can't confirm what kind of involvement any cosmic forces or dearly departed redheads might have in this whole thing. But how's about them two titles?
Current Uncanny writer Kieron Gillen will be writing…Uncanny X-Men. Though it's starting back at #1 (if ever Scott believes his work is done; girl it's plain to see). This is the Cyclops faction. As for Schism writer Jason Aaron, he's taking charge of Wolverine & the X-Men #1.
Says Lowe, "The best thing about this split is that the two books hit two very different chords. One is hardcore super hero action and the other is something else entirely that I can't go too deep into without spoiling Schism. The best way I can describe it is a return to a structure that made the X-Men what it was."
As for the logistics of canceling a book and then restarting it at #1?
"Our reason for doing this is because this new Uncanny X-Men series is a departure. It is no longer what Uncanny X-Men was at its core," Lowe said. "It's not your father's Uncanny X-Men. We are redefining what this book is and it necessitated this big of a statement."
Wolverine & the X-Men launches in October. The new Uncanny X-Men #1 in November.
hm, lots of questions for the rest of the line. what happens to Gischler’s title? wasn’t it supposed to be the “superhero” book? is Legacy still relevant? are the character placements on that image telling?
Intresting I might pick both these up definetly getting the Jason Aaron book
I don’t give a crap about numbering, this sounds cool. I’m excited to find out what the “something else entirely that I can’t go too deep into without spoiling Schism” is.
I hope we get some new art team announcements soon.
Aaron and Gillen? I’m down.
With any luck it’ll mean no more Land on Uncanny.
Looks like iceman is on Scott’s team though, so if I have to pick one… he’s the only one for me.
I don’t think it’s been “my father’s X-Men” for a very long time.
And did the other book have to be named the same thing as the recent cartoon? Woverine and the X-Men? Why isn’t the new Uncanny called “Cyclops and the X-Men”? Wolverine in the title sells more books? They need to keep one called Uncanny for when they revert back to the old numbering?
So Psyclocke is siding with Cyclops. I wonder what this means for Uncanny X-Force. Now that I think of it, they should just cancel that title and merge it with Wolverine and the X-Men.
All i hope is that uncanny uses this as a chance to dump Greg Land off art
This renumbering gimmick from Marvel is getting old.
I’m an X-Men fan probably as big as Ron… but now seriously. That means we are going to have 5 regular X-Men titles?
Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine & the X-Men, X-Men, X-Men Legacy, and Astonishing X-Men?
And at least one will ship twice a month on a rotating basis?
No wonder there is no monthly series that sells even close to 100,000 copies anymore…
Was reading Uncanny when Fraction was on it, jumped off when Gillen took over. Was reading Carey’s Legacy but will jump off when it’s replaced with Aaron’s Wolverine & The X-Men.
Means I’ve got a couple of extra spots to play with for the DC Reboot! I can try a couple of the books I was on the fence about…
These titles look very interesting…. I have not been reading schism and will probably grab the trade when it comes out.
I wonder if that’s just a promo image or if it indicates how the teams will break down. Will Wolverine and Cyclops flip a coin to decide who gets which half of Xavier? (“I call left lobe!”)
did someone say “blue team / gold team?.” 1st polybags, now multiple xmen teams. the 90’s are back… can we have multiple supermen too, dc?
@KenOchalek Part of me hopes so. It would be really interesting to see Emma and Scott split over this. I’m not a hater of the pairing, but it would be interesting to keep Scott in flux, and free Emma up to return to her old scheming ways.
Scott and Emma are on opposite sides of the promo picture… that makes me ridiculously happy.
@reddog
The Blue/Gold split was fairly arbitrary if I remember it right, both teams had pretty much the same mission and were definitely working toward the same goals. This split sounds like it’s going to be considerably more story/philosophy driven. But hey, if it means X-Men comics can sell a few hundred thousand copies again, while keeping the awesome creative talent we’ve got now, I say bring on the 90s!
@WonderAli They are just messing with us, Ali.
This sounds interesting. The X-Men were my favorite as a kid so I’ve been trying to jump on new X-Men comics for the last few years. But aside from X-Factor nothing had hooked me long term until Uncanny X-Force came along. This sounds like a good opportunity for them to build some unique teams. As with all Marvel titles, it also depends on the price. 2.99 and I’m probably in. 3.99 and the first issues better be really damn good.
I’m not much of an X-fan, but the promotional image leaves me with a question; what’s gonna happen with X-Force?
The odd thing is that there’s new guy on the Uncanny X-men team. He looks just like Wolverine but he wears an eyepatch. I think they call him Patch.
excited for these books I just hope to Xenu that whoever drew that promo image isn’t drawing either of them.
@WonderAli
Not only Scott and Emma, but Rogue, Gambit, Psylocke and Angel are on opposite sides of this image.
@clintaa
It’s by Chris Bachalo, who I enjoy, but I know his work isn’t everyone’s thing. He’s been doing a lot of single issues/short arcs lately, so I’m not sure he’d be a regular artist on anything. I like Ron’s suggestion of Jamie McKelvie (maybe with Gillen on Uncanny) and someone else relatively new to mainstream Marvel.
From what I just read on marvels twitter Greg land is still doing the art on one of these books
I think I would join Wolverine’s faction, but it’d be hard for me to follow a leader who wasn’t around to lead because he was too busy Avengering and X-Forcing.
So Greg Land is definitely on Gillen’s Uncanny X-Men title. Lame news, I know.
However, it’s possible that Gillen can utilize Land in a better way than Fraction did with him. I find that I can dig an artist’s work under one writer and hate it when he/she works with someone else. Case in point: I loved Mike Deodato’s work with the various Bendis projects, but hated his work with Brubaken on Secret Avengers.
Ugh . . . I was recently thinking about jumping back onto the X books because they sounded like they were getting interesting again. This just made me want to run away and hide. Maybe other people will enjoy it, but I’m not even goign to give it a chance. I want my old xmen back :-(.
@comicBOOKchris Was just going to say: http://jasoneaaron.blogspot.com/2011/06/thoughts-on-x-men-regenesis.html?spref=tw
Bummer. I’ll still be picking these both up because I desperately want the X-Men to be good again and these two writers I believe can do that.
Greg Land? Ugh.
Well, I was right about ‘Wolverine & The X-Men” being one of the two new title.
I’m excited for Bachalo on “WATXM”, but regardless of how much Gillen may be trying to shake up UXM, I cannot continue to buy Greg Land books.
Scott seems really really happy. Check out that smirk.
Having recently come back into the X-Men fold with Uncanny X-Force and now Uncanny X-Men, I’m really looking forward to seeing how this unfolds. I’m not as blind here as I was with Final Crisis.. so at least I’ll be able to follow along.
This just sounds so boring. I’m sorry but I have no interest in this what so ever. Plus Greg Land is STILL artist for Uncanny? Come on Marvel! Who is telling you that people want Land on a book?
Im sure people are creaming in their pants for another Aaron book but I’m not gonna fall for it….even with Bachelo on the book.
Also, this sounds almost EXACTLY how DC handled their JSA split and we all know how that was….
So this book will still look like a piece of shit more than half the time. Cool.
Damn, I might have to pick these up, although I’m disappointed that Land is staying on. What ever happened to a fresh start?
Professor X is back!
Greg Land is still on? Thank you Marvel for giving me a jumping off point. I’d rather read a Chuck Austen-written reboot of Fallen Angels drawn by Bret Blevins than ever see a panel drawn by Land again. Too bad, too, I’m a Gillen fan
Jason Aaron and Kieron Gillen have both said on their blogs that the promo image is NOT a tease for the post-Schism lineups.
Can someone explain the Greg Land hate? I don’t particularly like his art, but I’d take him over Billy Tan any day. And from what I understand, he’s scaled back (or gotten better at hiding) the lightboxing and repeated faces/poses recently.
“This ain’t your grandma’s Uncanny X-Men!”
Stunt re-numbering aside. I’m looking forward to this. Seems to be a genuinely new direction for the X-Men. Giving Jason Aaron a piece of the pie really breathes some life into the universe, IMO.
I’m not a huge fan of the title, “Wolverine & the X-Men,” however. It reminds me of the excellent cartoon from a couple years ago. Which was great. But did the same thing in feeling it had to use Wolverine to sell the X-Men.
And Greg Land must have compromising photos of someone high up at Marvel. I am not as vehemently allergic to his art as some. But I very much agree that it’s time for a change.
@KenOchalek Here you go.
@j206 What Land has on Marvel is sales. We talked to someone at Marvel about it and they said that while they personally were not a fan of his work, whenever he is put on a book the sales go up in a measurable way.
@conor – Really? Huh. That’s interesting. Would never have guessed it. But then again, there’s no understanding the tastes (or lack of) of the masses.
@j206 I don’t find it to be such a mystery. I’m assuming the sexiness to the characters he draws to be what sells. To me, well it’s just gross comic eye porn. And everybody’s smiling all the time. ugh.
Wasn’t this called Civil War not long ago? This storyline seems mighty familiar.
The Land phenomenon is not a mystery. He traces porn actresses. Boys impulse buy with their penises.
I just don’t understand why they don’t take Land off Uncanny, which is guaranteed to sell a ton, and put him on a more struggling title. Surely Land would like the challenge of something new, if nothing else…
@conor Thanks, I’d kind of forgotton about that episode and I’d totally forgotten just how egregious Land’s tracings and multiple uses of those tracings were. Ugh.
We’ll see how it goes on this next Uncanny arc — I’m hoping my enjoyment of Gillen’s stories will see me through the art.
And not that it’s their job, but I suppose Gillen can have some control over how much tracing Land can do by writing scenes that call for unique character designs or poses. Of course, that’s unfairly assuming Greg Land photo-traces because he’s lazy.
Wow, that’s interesting about Land and sales. I guess I had just assumed he got work because he was fast and got put on Uncanny b/c it was going to sell whether or not the art was good. If he’s actually driving sales in a positive way I may have to rethink. . .well, everything. My world is shattered.
Okay not really. I’m glad Gillen & Aaron are getting these big books, and I hope it’s a sign of the kind of writing talent Marvel is counting on to carry their franchises forward.
I haven’t gotten any of Land’s more recent stuff. But i enjoyed his work on Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate Power, and Phoenix Endsong.
Phototracing, regardless of the source, doesn’t bother me if it ends up looking good. The only time it bugs me is when the same character looks like two vastly different actors from one page to the next.
Regenesis. Sounds like a yoghurt. However… I’m in.
@oldmanlogan88
While I’m not opposed to Land’s art, it’s not my favorite style. However, I do see a glimmer of hope. Marvel’s twitter also says Land will be sharing art duties will Carlos Pacheco on one of the books.
I subscribe to New Mutants and have been following Age of X and its aftermath through the other X books. I was impressed and was considering subscriptions to another X title. I’m not so sure now.
On the one hand, it would be great to follow the splintered teams and see how their stories unfold. It could be great. However, I have a budget and would prefer not to buy numerous books to get the full story. I’d like to try on some of the DC relaunch titles.
I’m torn! Regardless, it’s exciting to see Marvel shaking up the X-Men once again.
didn’t they do this before? split the teams? wasn’t there already a story called ‘Schizm’ in the 90’s or something? Also ‘Wolverine & the X-Men’ is a terrible title
@kidCharlemagne Not to retailers it isn’t. It has Wolverine in the title, so it has a better than even chance of selling.
No one ruined Deadpool and just like Reynolds says in this interview “its just his humble beginnings” after saying “will we see the Deadpool everyone knows from the comic books”. On a timeline it can work out perfect, in the end of the credits in the theatre they showed Deadpools severed heads eyes open, when I watched it on HBO, end credit scene was Logan in Japan but Deadpool is just that a pool as in gene pool and supposedly has the strongest mutant healing factor and was being controlled in the end of origins so what I propose is this: Deadpools solo movie stay in the current X-VERSE movie franchise and pick up where he left off, have Weapon X scientists get him back on the table and say he’s too powerful and uncontrollable like this and genetically remove the mutant abilities he doesn’t have in the comics and just leave him with his natural born abilities as an excellent merc, the healing factor and maybe some implanted then have him cut loose, kill the doctors and scientists (all but one) and have him slice his own mouth open to aid the grotesque appearance we all know and love, have him escape and make the classic red n black costume. Theres the first 20 minutes or less of X-Men Origins: Deadpool then early in the script get him into becoming a merc for hire, going with him on his 1st assigment, throw in some great cameos like Domino or the likes of Cable and we got a Deadpool movie. (youtube wouldn’t let me post this on a Deadpool fan trailer dim wit display argument so I had to put it somewhere, it must’ve been too many characters.) Hope it sparks some upcoming special iFanboy podcasts and debate,enjoy. Its my script.
